 Many, Much, A lot

Many + исчисляемые существительные.

В разговорной речи many в основном используется только в отрицательных и вопросительных предложениях.

He doesn’t have many friends.

How many books are there on the shelf?

Much + неисчисляемые существительные.

Much употребляется только в отрицательных и вопросительных предложениях. В утвердительных предложениях может употребляться в таких словосочетаниях, как, например very much, too much, so much. Much может употребляется и без существительного.

I haven’t got much money.

How much juice is there in the bottle?

Thank you very much.

not + many / much обычно переводится «мало»,

not very much – «не очень».

He didn’t have many toys. – У него было мало игрушек.

“Did you like the film?” “Not very much.” – «Тебе понравился фильм?» - «Не очень.»

A lot of,lots of употребляются как с исчисляемыми, так и неисчисляемыми существительными и используются во всех типах предложений, хотя в отрицательных и вопросительных предложениях чаще используются many и much. Выражение a lot (без of) может употребляться без существительного.

She has got a lot of friends. / She has got lots of friends.

There are a lot of books on the shelf. / There are lots of books on the shelf.

There is a lot of snow in the streets. / There is lots of snow in the streets.

Mr Brown knows a lot about wild animals.
