Backpacking is both an adventurous lifestyle, and hobby, and a good alternative to standard tourism. Backpackers avoid hotel services and prefer to spend a night in a tent or in the open air. They communicate with local people not through guides, but face-to face. They eat not in restaurants, but in budget cafes and dining-halls. Backpackers use not only taxis and tourist buses but also different types of transport, including public transport.

For backpackers reaching the destination is not the most important thing. The most significant things for them are the process of travelling itself and the succession of impressions. Backpackers are not tourists, they are independent travelers who are fond of adventures and discoveries, move freely and don’t have a strict schedule. Backpackers are thrifty and unpretentious, and as a rule look for budget accommodation and transportation. They are proud of their ability to travel cheap, and like to tell each other stories concerning such an experience. To stick to their travel budget backpackers stay at cheap hotels, hostels, camping sites, guesthouses and even in locals’ homes. They use lowcost airlines, train ticket discounts, hike long distances and often hitchhike.

Hitchhiking is a means of transportation which involves asking people for a lift in their cars or other road vehicles. It is usually free, but sometimes it can cost a certain amount of money. Hitchhiking is one of the cheapest ways of transportation, which is also called ‘autostop’. To ask for a lift usually the hitchhiker uses a right hand gesture. Hitchhiking is for people with great endurance, patience and courage.
