VOCABULARY FOCUS

Learning Tip Reviewing Vocabulary Think about effective strategies to learn new English words. Which of them work best for you? For example, some people prefer to use a vocabulary notebook or cards to record and review vocabulary. It usually takes from 5 to 15 reviews or uses of a single word to commit the word to memory. Here are some methods you can try: ü Look away from the notebook when reviewing-do not just read it. ü Say the word and meanings aloud. ü Practice with a partner. ü Think of different categories to place the words in. ü Use the words in new sentences related to your own experiences.

Vocabulary in context. With a partner discuss the meanings of the following words and word collocations from Texts 1A and 1C. Use a dictionary if necessary. Then write sentences to illustrate their usage.

a wide range of options rewarding careers the significance of something better career options acquire a skill or knowledge the experience of doing something to create opportunities complex subjects in an effective way to meet the requirements to provide somebody with something to be brought up to date to improve the overall quality     an ability to do something to be regarded as to be assessed by to get a degree the quality of teaching to award degrees undergraduate students graduates/postgraduates accommodation and other facilities the enrolment for to receive feedback to investigate new approaches to explore course material

Self-study task. Dictionary skills. Look through Text B in reading section and write your own list of vocabulary items (10-15 words or word combinations) which you consider worth focusing on. Work with a dictionary and write your own vocabulary notes for each word from your list: translation into Russian, English definition, part of speech, typical collocations or 2-3 examples with each word. Compare your lists in groups and check if your groupmates know the words from your list. Share your materials with other students if necessary.

Matching. Match the words from reading with their definitions. Indicate whether each word in the list is a verb, a noun, an adjective, or an adverb. Write the words on cards and practice giving their definitions. In groups take turns to choose a card and give a sentence example with the word on the card.
