Тема №1 AC and DC Electric Motors.

Электрические двигатели.

DC MOTOR

DC motor is one of two basic types of motors: the other type is the alternating current(AC) motor.
A direct current (DC) motor converts electrical energy into mechanical energy. DC motors are the simplest of motor and type are used in household appliances, such as electric razors, andelectric windows and fans in cars.

In the above picture, see two magnets in the motor:The armature (or rotor) is an electromagnet and the field magnet is a permanent magnet.

DC motor has either permanent magnets or electromagnets (electromagnetic windings), which produce a magnetic field. When current passes through the armature (also known as the coil) placed between the north and south poles ofthe magnet, the field generated by the armature interacts with the field from the magnet and the armature rotates. The force rotating the armature is called torque.

In DC motor, the magnet forms the stator, the armature placed a on the rotor and a commutator switches the current flow from one coil to the other. The commutator connects the power source to the armature through the use of brushes. DС motors operate at a fixed speed for a fixed voltage.

DC Motor Types

Among DC motors, there are shunt-wound, series-wound, compound-woundmotors. There are also permanent magnet motors.

The field coils and the armature in a shunt-wound motor are connected in parallel, also known as shunt, so the field coil current is proportional to the load on the motor.

In series-wound motors, the field coils and armature are connected in series and the current flows through the field coils and through the armature. The advantage of series-wound motors is that they have a large torque and they can be operated at low speed.

A compound-wound motor is hybrid of both the shunt-wound and series-wound types. It combines the characteristics of a series- wound motor and a shunt-wound motor. It has a greater torque than a shunt motor but a constant speed.

The function of the commutator is to transfer current to the rotating shaft. Brushes, electric contacts on the commutator, connect the power source to the armature. A brush is an electrical component which makes contact between a stationary and a moving electrical circuit.Brushes usually consist of a carbon/graphite composition.

At certain times during the rotation of a DC motor, the commutator must reverse the current. This can lead to decreased motor life because of the wear tear that occurs through friction and arcing.

AC MOTOR

AC motors are electromagnetic devices that have an alternating current as a power source. Their function is to convert mechanical energy into electrical that can perform work. They operation the principle ofFaraday law of induction, which states that a rapidly changing magnetic field produces an induced emf or voltage.

Wires that carry current produce magnetic fields. Michael Faraday discovered that when a wire is in a changing magnetic field, a current is induced just as if there were a source of emf. The rapid is the changing of field, the greater is the generated more emf.

The two most common types of AC motors are induction and synchronous.

A large percentage of small AC motors are induction motors. There is no current supplied to the rotating coils on the armature. These coils are closed loops which have large currents induced in them because of their low resistance. Induction motors obtain their torque from currents induced in these loops by the changing magnetic field produced in the stator (stationary) coils.

A rotating magnetic field in an induction motor exerts a torque on the armature coils. In the illustration, the rotating field is achieved by the extra coils on the pole pieces. Induction AC motors are found in refrigerators, trains, computers, hard drives, industrial machinery, household appliances and many other electronic devices. Induction motors are simpler to make, less expensive to produce and they have big life-time.

Synchronous AC motors turn at the same speed as the magnetic field. The stator may use permanent magnets or wound magnetic poles. The current in the coils of the rotor is changing to run same direction. Speed of synchronous AC motors is determined by the number ofpairs of poles and the frequency of supplied alternating current.

Electric Motor vs Generator

Electricity has become an inseparable part of our life; more or less our whole lifestyle is based on the electrical equipment. Energy is converted from many forms to the form of electrical energy, to power up all these devices. The electric motor is a device which converts mechanical energy into electrical energy. On the other hand, devices are used to transform electrical energy into mechanical as required. The motor is the device that performs this function.

Briefing

Generally, Electric company installs Single phase energy meter for less than 7.5kW (10HP) load in domestic areas (consumer unit for home). If the limit is exceeded, then it’s recommended that install a 3-phaseenergy meter for Consumer units, when load is exceeds from 7.5 kW, then 3-phase electrical wiring is recommended in domestic areas (Homes)

Theory

We assume that we will only connect single phase load (Light points, fans, TV, AC etc.) in this three phase electrical wiring installation. In other words, we will not power up 3 phase motors because in our homes, we haven’t that kind of (three phase) loads. If three phase load exists in your home, then you can so. As we can see that the total load is exceeded the limit of single phase electrical wiring installation, that’s why we have to wire our distribution in three phase system.

Practical Procedure of Three Phase wiring of distribution board & installation

As we have learned the basic electrical wiring of bulb, fans etc (i.e. Sub-circuits and final sub circuits)

· First of all, connect the three-phase energy meter as shown in fig. (if you don’t sure that how to wire a 3-phase energy meter, then check this simple method. Howtowire a Three-PhaseEnergyMeter)

· Connect the MCCB (Moulded Case circuit Breaker) as main switch to the incoming three phases (R, Y, B) from 3-phase energy meter

· Now connect the outgoing phases (R, Y, B) from MCCB (Moulded Case circuit Breaker) to the DP (Double Pole MCB, RCD, SP (Single Pole MCBs and load) as shown in fig)

· Also connect the Neutral wires to RCDs and then to neutral links and then to specific loads (as shown in fig).

How to Connect Single Phase & Three Phase Loads in a Three Phase Wiring Distribution System

In the above 3-phase wiring system, load can be connected by this way

General Precaution

· Disconnect the power source before servicing, repairing or installing electrical equipments and installation.

· Also use the proper cable in size with this simple calculation method (How to determine the suitable size of cable for Electrical Wiring Installation)

· Never try to work on electricity without proper guidance and care

· Work with electricity only in presence of those persons who has good knowledge and practical work to deal with electricity

· Read all instruction and cautions and follow them strictly.

· The author will not be liable for any losses, injuries, or damages from the display or use of this information or try any circuit in wrong format so please! Be careful because it’s all about electricity and electricity is too dangerous

Тема № 5 Power Stations.

Thermal Power Station.

A modern thermal power-station is known to consist of four principal components, namely, coal handling and storage, boiler house, turbine house, switch gear.If you have not seen a power-station boiler it will be difficult for you to imagine its enormous size.

Besides the principal components mentioned above there are many additional parts of the plant. The most important of them is the turbogenerator in which the current is actually generated.A steam turbine requires boilers to provide steam. Boilers need a coal-handling plant on the one hand and an ash-disposal plant on the other. Large fans are quite necessary to provide air for the furnaces. Water for the boilers requires feed pumps. Steam must be condensed after it has passed through the turbines, and this requires large quantities of cooling water. The flue gases carry dust which must be removed by cleaning the gases before they go into the open air.

A modern thermal power-station is equipped with one or more turbine generator units which convert heat energy into electric energy. The steam to drive the turbine which, in its turn, turns the rotor or revolving part of the generator is generated in boilers heated by furnaces in which one of three fuels may be used-coal, oil and natural gas. Coal continues to be the most important and the most economical of these fuels.

At present great attention is being paid to combined generation of heat and electricity at heat-and-power plants and to centralized heat supply. One of the world’s largest heat-and-power installations is operating at the Moskowskaya thermal power-station-25.

Thermal power-stations are considered to be the basis of our country’s power industry. More than 80% of the country’s total power output comes from the above stations. It is necessary to say that separate power-stations in our country are integrated into power systems. Integration of power systems is a higher stage in the scientific and technical development of power engineering.

Safety Rules

Read all of these basic safety precautions before starting to work on any of the motors. Failure to do so may result in personal injury, fire, and electric shock.

· You should always keep your work area clean and well lit.

· All motors include many small parts; keep very young children away from your work area.

· Motors spin very fast; always wear safety goggles.

· Super Glue, provided with most of the kits, is “instant bonding”. Point tube away from face and body. Do not squeeze while opening.

· The T-pin and pushpin are sharp, be careful not to poke yourself.

· Do not leave the motor unattended.

· If you leave the battery shorted for a long period of time it may rupture or even explode.

· Do not exceed 12 Volts to power the motors. You may get an electric shock. High voltages may also cause parts to overheat and create a fire.

· If the current flowing through the transistor is big, it may get very hot. Do not touch it to prevent burns.

· The soldering iron gets very hot! Be very careful with this tool, as it is easy to burn yourself with it.

· Health hazard warning: Solder may contain lead. It is not suitable for small children.

These motor kits should not be used by anyone younger than 13 years old without adult supervision.
