Part I Tenses in the active voice

Unit 1 Present Simple и Present Continuous

Present Simple

Present Simple

Утвердительная форма Present Simple совпадает с формой инфинитива без частицы to во всех лицах, кроме 3-го лица единственного числа, которое принимает окончание -s: I/we/you/they work, he/she/it works. После звонких согласных и гласных окончание -s произносится - [ z ], после глухих согласных - [ s ]: he spends [spendz], she sees [si:z], he stops [stops], she looks [luks].

Глаголы, оканчивающиеся на с предшествующей согласной изменяют в 3-м лице единственного числа y на i и принимают окончание -es: We study - he studies [stʌdiz].

We lay - he lays [leiz].

Глаголы to do и to go в 3-м лице единственного числа принимают окончание -es: She

does [dʌz], she goes [gouz].

Вопросительная форма Present Simple образуется с помощью вспомогательного глагола to do, который в 3-м лице единственного числа имеет форму does, и инфинитива смыслового глагола без частицы to: Do you know? Does he know?

Отрицательная форма образуется также с помощью вспомогательного глагола to do (does) и отрицательной частицы not: I do not (don't) go, she does not (doesn't) go.

Meet my friend Fred.

Spell your name.

Don't open the window.

Don't go there.

He открывайте окно.

He ходите туда.

Present Simple

Present Simple

100% 75%________ 50%________ 25%________ 10%________ 5%_________ 0%

Yes / No questions

Do you like detective stories?

Do you often visit them?

He live s in London.

Doe s he live in London?

She speak s English fluently.

Doe s she speak English fluently?

Can I talk to you?

Must you go there now?

Are they your friends?

Is he a doctor?

Are you tired?

Do you like dancing? Yes, I do (No, I don't).

Does he speak French? Yes, he does (No, he doesn't).

Does she have enough money? Yes, she does (No, she doesn't).

Can he play chess? Yes, he can (No, he can't).

What do you usually do at the weekend?

What can I do for you?

What does your father do (for a living)? - He is a lawyer.

Если в состав сказуемого входит глагол-связка to be, то вопросы к именной части сказуемого могут начинаться с who (когда речь идёт о лице), what (когда речь идёт о предмете) и ряда словосочетаний с вопросительными словами what и howwhat colour, what kind (sort) of, how old, how big, how many (much) и т.д.

Present Continuous

Present Continuous.

Present Continuous образуется при помощи вспомогательного глагола to be в соответствующем лице настоящего времени (am, is, are) и причастия I (ing-form) смыслового глагола.

I’m learning English.

He’s watching television.

They’re taking a test.

make – mak ing

give – giv ing

sit – si tting

run – ru nning

permit – permi tting

forget – forge tting

prefer – prefe rring

occur – occu rring

compel - compe lling

cancel – cance lling

expel – expe lling

travel – trave ling

picnic- picni cking

panic - pani cking

e) Причастие I от глаголов die, lie и tie имеет форму dying, lying, tying.

Вопросительная форма Present Continuous начинается с вспомогательного глагола to be в соответствующем лице и числе (am, is, are), за которым следует подлежащее, а затем причастия I смыслового глагола и остальные члены предложения:

Am I speaking too fast?

Is the bus coming?

Are you waiting for a bus?

What is she doing?

Where are they going?

What Who are you looking at? talking about? listening to?

I’m not listening to you.

He isn’t watching television.

You are not disturbing me.

Exercise 9. Make questions using verbs in brackets.

Example:

I / too fast? (drive) - Am I driving too fast?

Past Simple

Past Simple

play ed [plei d ], div ed [daiv d ]

ask ed [a:sk t ], lik ed [laik t ]

b) после d и t как [ id ]:

to tr y – tr ied, to fr y – fr ied, to marr y – marr ied

Если перед y стоит гласная, то изменений не происходит: to pl a y – play ed, to st a y – stay ed, to ob e y - obey ed

to sto p – sto pp ed, to spo t – spo tt ed, to na g – na gg ed

to com'mit – com'mi tt ed, to pre'fer – pre'fe rr ed, to sub'mit – sub'mi tt ed

Но: to de'velop – de'velo ped, to 'border – 'borde red

to 'trave l – 'trave ll ed, to 'cance l – 'cance ll ed, to 'signa l – 'signa ll ed

ex'pel – ex'pe ll ed

Но: 'signa l – 'signa l ed

Вопросительная форма Past Simple как правильных, так и неправильных глаголов образуется при помощи вспомогательного глагола to do (в Past Simple did) и смыслового глагола без частицы to:

He ask ed He spoke.

.

Did he ask? Did he speak?

I did not (didn’t) ask.

I did not (didn’t) speak.

Past Simple

На время совершения действия часто указывают обстоятельства времени: yesterday, a week ago, last year, when I was at school:

I first visited London 5 years ago.

We didn’t go out last night. We stayed at home and watched TV.

I slept very badly.

I saw him in the office (when I was there this morning).

Did the postman bring any letters? (the postman calls at a given time in the day)

I smoked 40 cigarettes a day till I gave up.

When I lived in London, I walked through the park every day.

I got up, switched off the radio and sat down again.

He found his lighter, lit a cigarette and began to read the letter.

We stayed in the garden for a long time.

She spoke for over an hour.

You often mentioned her in your letters.

Every day I went to the seaside.

Обычный, повторяющийся характер действий в прошлом передается при помощи сочетаний used to + Infinitive и would + Infinitive (употребление would + Infinitive характерно для литературного стиля)

He used to come to us on Sundays.

He would come to us on Sundays.

Иногда used to + Infinitive может характеризовать лицо или предмет в прошлом (часто с глаголами to be, to live, to know). д.

He used to be an army officer.

There used to be a cinema in this street.

Вопросительная и отрицательная формы образуются при помощи вспомогательного глагола did: Did you use to smoke? I didn’t use to smoke. He used to live in Liverpool, didn’t he? Отрицательная форма может также образовываться при помощи наречия never: I never used to smoke.

Past Continuous

Past Continuous

Past Continuous образуется при помощи вспомогательного глагола to be в Past Simple (was, were) и причастия I смыслового глагола.

I was driving

We were working

She was talking

They were leaving

Вопросительная форма Past Continuous начинается с вспомогательного глагола to be в соответствующем лице и числе (was, were), за которым следует подлежащее и причастие I смыслового глагола, а затем остальные члены предложения:

Was she talking?

Were they talking?

I was not (wasn’t) driving.

They were not (weren’t) working.

Present Perfect

Present Perfect

Present Perfect образуется при помощи вспомогательного глагола to have в Present Simple (have, has) и причастия II смыслового глагола (3 форма глагола).

I’ ve nearly finished my work.

He’ s just phoned from the airport.

It’ s just started to rain.

Have you washed your hands?

Who has eaten all the grapes?

I ’ve not = I have not, he ’s not = he has not

I’ve not translated the text yet.

I haven’t =

= I have not, he hasn’t = he has not

Past Perfect

Past Perfect

Past Perfect образуется при помощи вспомогательного глагола to have в Past Simple (had) и причастия II смыслового глагола.

By the end of the year he had learnt to speak French.

I realized that I had seen him somewhere before.

I ’d forgotten to tell you.

We ’d never argued before.

Had you met her before you started college?

Before my eighteenth birthday I had not (hadn’t) been out of England.

Past Perfect.

Past Perfect

1. Для выражения действия, которое произошло раньше другого действия в прошлом или завершилось к определенному моменту в прошлом (by 6 o'clock, by that time, by the 1st of September):

We had a fantastic holiday, but we had earned it.

Susan bought the house where her grandparents had once lived.

By 6 o’clock he had finished his work.

By the 20th of June we had passed all the exams.

I hadn’t gone a hundred yards from the corner when I noticed there was a car

behind us (Не прошел я и ста ярдов, как ……).

Joe had come down into the hall and was waiting for his friend.

The wind had stopped, but it was still raining.

3. В придаточных предложениях времени, вводимых союзами after, when и before может употребляться как Past Perfect, так и Past Simple.

She saw him every day after we arrived in New York.

He knew the poem by heart after he had heard it several times.

When he finished speaking, everyone clapped.

When they had gone I decided to look through my papers again.

Past Simple.

I had asked three times for the money before he paid me.

He decided to buy a present for his daughter before he left.

I knew the truth before I had been in the house for an hour.

He began apologizing before I had paid the driver.

4. В главном предложении с союзами hardly …. when, scarcely …. when, no sooner …. than (не успел …. Past Simple.

He had scarcely finished his work when somebody knocked at the door.

We had hardly settled down in our seats when the lights went out.

Hardly had the train left the station when there was an explosion.

Scarcely had we arrived home when the police called.

No sooner had it stopped raining than the sun came out.

Past Perfect.

In October Andrew set out alone to London. Now that the exam was so close at hand, he felt that he knew nothing. Yet, on the following day when he began the written part of the examination, he found himself answering the papers with a blind automatism. He wrote and wrote, never looking at the clock, filling sheet after sheet. He had taken a room at the Museum Hotel. Here it was extremely cheap. But the food was bad. Between the exams he lived in a kind of a daze.

a) Jack chose the hotel. He had never been there before but he had heard his mother speak of it once. She had said she had liked it.

b) It was at Blackstable that I first met Edward. I was fifteen and had just come back from school or the summer holidays. The morning after I got home I took a towel and went down to the beach. Passing the bank, I called in to greet the manager, and when I came out I met my uncle. He stopped and shook hands with me. He was walking with a stranger. He introduced me to him.

Exercise 7. Put verbs in brackets into either the Past Simple or the Past perfect.

I can’t believe I (get) ………. that apartment. I (submit) ………. my application last week, but I didn’t think I had a chance of actually getting it. When I (show) ………. up to take a look around, there were at least twenty other people who (arrive) ………. before me. Most of them (fill, already) ………. out their applications and were already leaving. The landlord said I could still apply, so I did.

I (try) ………. to fill out the form, but I couldn’t answer half of the questions. They (want) ………. me to include references, but I didn’t want to list my previous landlord because I (have) ………. some problems with him in the past and I knew he wouldn’t recommend me. I (end) ………. up listing my father as a reference.

It was total luck that he (decide) ………. to give me the apartment. It turns out that the landlord and my father (go) ………. to high school together. He decided that I could have the apartment before he (look) ………. at my credit report. I really lucked out.
