Present Perfect and Past Simple

I saw this film long time ago

(давно – long time ago = констатация факта в прошлом)

I haven’t seen such a good film for a long time.

(давно – for a long time = в течение долгого времени, включающего момент речи до настоящего момента)

2) С обстоятельствами времени today, this morning, this afternoon, которые обозначают незаконченный период, могут использоваться как Present Perfect, так и Past Simple.

I have seen him today
this morning
saw
this afternoon

Past Simple.

I wasn’t very well this morning, but I’m perfectly all right now.

Did you get any mail today? (mail is delivered at a given time)

Наречие recently в значении «недавно» (at a time that was not long ago) употребляется с глаголом в Past Simple:

She only recently discovered the truth.

В значении «за последнее время» (at a time that started not long) – с глаголом в Present Perfect.

Have you seen her recently?

Наречие just в значении «только что» (in the very recent past) часто употребляется с глаголом в Present Perfect, с Past Simple его употребление невозможно.

В то же время сочетание just now в значении “a moment ago” употребляется в Past Simple, в Present Perfect оно употребляться не может.

I have just seen him   He was talking to somebody in the hall
I saw him just now

I’m sorry if I interrupted you just now.

Past Simple.

Have you had

Сравните: Вы хорошо провели время? a good time?

Did you have

Вопрос “have you had a good time?” будет уместен в конце вечеринки, в то время, как вопрос “Did you have a good time?”, можно задать на следующий день.

Следует также различать употребление Past Simple и Present Perfect в предложениях, где есть обстоятельство времени с прилагательным last: last year и in the last year.

I went to England last year.

I have been to England in the last year.

Present Perfect употребляется также с сочетанием in the past year:

In the past year, a lot ofpeople have become unemployed in Scotland.

Present Perfect не употребляется в специальных вопросах, начинающихся с When и How. Past Simple:

When did you arrive?

How did you get in?

Present Perfect

What did you say?

I did not hear your question.

вместо Present Perfect (I’ve heard) используется Present Simple (I hear):

I hear you are leaving us.

I hear you have changed your job.

They tell me you have changed your job.

Past Perfect

Past Perfect

Past Perfect образуется при помощи вспомогательного глагола to have в Past Simple (had) и причастия II смыслового глагола.

By the end of the year he had learnt to speak French.

I realized that I had seen him somewhere before.

I ’d forgotten to tell you.

We ’d never argued before.

Had you met her before you started college?

Before my eighteenth birthday I had not (hadn’t) been out of England.

Past Perfect.

Past Perfect

1. Для выражения действия, которое произошло раньше другого действия в прошлом или завершилось к определенному моменту в прошлом (by 6 o'clock, by that time, by the 1st of September):

We had a fantastic holiday, but we had earned it.

Susan bought the house where her grandparents had once lived.

By 6 o’clock he had finished his work.

By the 20th of June we had passed all the exams.

I hadn’t gone a hundred yards from the corner when I noticed there was a car

behind us (Не прошел я и ста ярдов, как ……).

Joe had come down into the hall and was waiting for his friend.

The wind had stopped, but it was still raining.

3. В придаточных предложениях времени, вводимых союзами after, when и before может употребляться как Past Perfect, так и Past Simple.

She saw him every day after we arrived in New York.

He knew the poem by heart after he had heard it several times.

When he finished speaking, everyone clapped.

When they had gone I decided to look through my papers again.

Past Simple.

I had asked three times for the money before he paid me.

He decided to buy a present for his daughter before he left.

I knew the truth before I had been in the house for an hour.

He began apologizing before I had paid the driver.

4. В главном предложении с союзами hardly …. when, scarcely …. when, no sooner …. than (не успел …. Past Simple.

He had scarcely finished his work when somebody knocked at the door.

We had hardly settled down in our seats when the lights went out.

Hardly had the train left the station when there was an explosion.

Scarcely had we arrived home when the police called.

No sooner had it stopped raining than the sun came out.

Past Perfect.

In October Andrew set out alone to London. Now that the exam was so close at hand, he felt that he knew nothing. Yet, on the following day when he began the written part of the examination, he found himself answering the papers with a blind automatism. He wrote and wrote, never looking at the clock, filling sheet after sheet. He had taken a room at the Museum Hotel. Here it was extremely cheap. But the food was bad. Between the exams he lived in a kind of a daze.

a) Jack chose the hotel. He had never been there before but he had heard his mother speak of it once. She had said she had liked it.

b) It was at Blackstable that I first met Edward. I was fifteen and had just come back from school or the summer holidays. The morning after I got home I took a towel and went down to the beach. Passing the bank, I called in to greet the manager, and when I came out I met my uncle. He stopped and shook hands with me. He was walking with a stranger. He introduced me to him.

Exercise 7. Put verbs in brackets into either the Past Simple or the Past perfect.

I can’t believe I (get) ………. that apartment. I (submit) ………. my application last week, but I didn’t think I had a chance of actually getting it. When I (show) ………. up to take a look around, there were at least twenty other people who (arrive) ………. before me. Most of them (fill, already) ………. out their applications and were already leaving. The landlord said I could still apply, so I did.

I (try) ………. to fill out the form, but I couldn’t answer half of the questions. They (want) ………. me to include references, but I didn’t want to list my previous landlord because I (have) ………. some problems with him in the past and I knew he wouldn’t recommend me. I (end) ………. up listing my father as a reference.

It was total luck that he (decide) ………. to give me the apartment. It turns out that the landlord and my father (go) ………. to high school together. He decided that I could have the apartment before he (look) ………. at my credit report. I really lucked out.

Unit 4. Present Perfect Continuous and Past Perfect Continuous

Present Perfect Continuous

Present Perfect Continuous.

Present Perfect Continuous образуется при помощи вспомогательного глагола to be в Present Perfect (have been, has been) и причастия I смыслового глагола: В разговорном языке используется краткая форма первого вспомогательного глагола (have, has):

I’ ve been working here since 1997.

He’ s been waiting for you for half an hour.

Have you been waiting long?

How long have you been waiting for me?

I havenot (haven’t) been living in St. Petersburg all my life.

She hasnot (hasn’t) been working since morning.

Present Perfect Continuous (always, only, still, etc.)

You have only been waiting here for twenty minutes.

Have you only been waiting here for twenty minutes?

Present Perfect Continuous

Present Perfect Continuous

На весь период продолжения действия обычно указывает обстоятельство времени с предлогом for (for a month, for two hours). На момент, с которого началось действие, может указывать обстоятельство времени с предлогом since (since yesterday, since that night) или союз since с последующим придаточным предложением времени (since I first saw you, since he left school).

I have been working on my term-paper for a month.

It has been raining since yesterday.

I have been thinking of you since I first saw you.

Present Perfect Continuous

Present Perfect.

I have known him all my life.

She has been here since 10 o’clock.

I have been working for the company for five years.

I have worked for the company for five years.

It has been raining for three hours.

It has rained for three hours.

Present Perfect Continuous употребляется также в специальных вопросах, начинающихся с How long? и Since when?

How long have you been staying here?

Since when has he been teaching in this college?

You are out of breath. Have you been running?

You hands are dirty. It seems you have been working in the garden.

The children have been washing the dog. The bathroom is a mess.

Someone has been reading my mail. The letters are scattered all over the place.

Scientists have been warning us about air pollution for years.

I have been taking French lessons this summer.

Present Perfect.

I have been writing letters since morning.

I have written eight letters today.

There’s one thing I’ve been meaning to ask you.

I have been hoping to meet you ever since I read your first novel.

I’m glad you’re having lunch here. I’ve been wanting to talk to you.
