1. Silk thread is considered to be stronger then steel wire of the same diameter. 2. Silk filament can be considerably stretched without breaking. 3. A very strong, light and durable fabric can be made of silk fibres. 4. Silk is produced by the silkworm in spinning a cocoon. 5. The cocoons are gathered as soon as they have been spun. 6. The silk filaments are reeled off the cocoons into hanks. 7. The cocoons are steeped in hot water to soften the silk gum.

Exercise 3. Read and translate the sentences paying special attention to the translation of the Gerunds and Gerundial Constructions.

1. The fibres cannot be manufactured into yarn without possessing certain properties.

2. On being fully formed the moth eats its way out of the cocoon.

3. After laying eggs the moth dies.

4. On being sorted the wool is washed several times to remove dirt and fat.

5. In baking and steaming cocoons one has to be careful in order not to spoil the silk.

6. We know of wool fibres being used as pile materials for carpets.
