Широко пропагандируется их роль в улучшении проблемы парниковых газов и глобальном потеплении как поглотителей углерода. Леса улучшают климат как местно, так и на дальние дистанции, вырабатывая кислород в атмосферу, фильтруя многие атмосферные загрязнения, предотвращая эрозию почвы и т.д.
