TEXT 11. Engineering materials.
Plastics are synthetic materials. They can be softened and moulded into useful articles. They have many applications in engineering. There are two of plastics: thermoplastic and thermosetting plastics. ABS is a thermoplastic which is tough and durable. Because it has high impact strength it has applications where sudden loads may occur. Nylon is a hard, tough thermoplastic. It is used where silent, low-friction operation is required. Acrylic can be formed in several ways. It is hard, durable, and has many uses. Polyester resin is a thermosetting plastic used for castings. It has a number of useful properties. After you read Tasks 1.Add the extra information to the following sentences about the plastics. 1.Plastic can be moulded into plates, car components, and medical aids. More… 2. Thermoplastics soften when heated again and again. More… 3. Thermosetting plastics set hard and do not alter if heating again. More… 4. ABS is used for safety helmets. More… 5. Nylon is self-lubricating. More… 6. Nylon is used for motorized drives in cameras. More… 7. Acrylic is a clear thermoplastic. More… 8. Acrylic is used for aircraft canopies and double glazing. More… 9. Polyester resin is used for boat and car bodies. More… 10. Polyester resin is hard and has good chemical and heat resistance. More… 2.Scan the table which follows to find a material which is: 1 soft 2 ductile 3 malleable 4 tough 5 scratch-resistant 6 conductive and malleable 7 durable and hard 8 stiff and brittle 9 ductile and corrosion-resistant 10 heat-resistant and chemical-resistant
3.Using the table above describe each of the materials and key properties of the following materials writing the sort essay. 4.In pairs, discuss why the properties of the metals, thermoplastics, thermosetting plastics important for each application describe in the table. 5. Work in pairs. a)give one advantage of plastic as an engineering material. b)give one example of a thermoplastic c)give one example of a product that can be made from thermoplastic Before you start Work in groups and discuss the questions. What properties of materials do you know? Why is it important to know about mechanical properties of materials for engineers? TEXT 12. Mechanical properties of materials. Part I. Materials Science and Technology is the study of materials and how they can be fabricated to meet the needs of modern technology. Using the laboratorytechniques and knowledge of physics, chemistry, and metallurgy, scientists are finding new ways of using metals, plastics and other materials.
Engineers must know how materialsrespond to external forces, such astension, compression, torsion, bending, and shear. All materials respond to these forces by elastic deformation. That is, the materials return their original size and form when the external force disappears. The materials may also have permanentdeformation or they may fracture. The results of external forces are creep and fatigue. Compression is a pressure causing a decrease in volume. When a material is subjected to a bending, shearing, or torsion (twisting) force, both tensile and compressive forces are simultaneously at work. When a metal bar is bent, one side of it is stretched and subjected to a tensional force, and the other side is compressed. Tension is a pulling force; for example, the force in a cable holding a weight. Under tension, a material usually stretches, returning to its original length if the force does not exceed the material's elastic limit. Under larger tensions, the material does not return completely to its original condition, and under greater forces the material ruptures. Fatigue is the growth of cracks under stress. It occurs when a mechanical part is subjected to a repeated or cyclic stress, such as vibration. Even when the maximum stress never exceeds the elastic limit, failure of the material can occur even after a short time. No deformation is seen during fatigue, but small localized cracks develop and propagate through the material until the remaining cross-sectional area cannot support the maximum stress of the cyclic force. Knowledge of tensile stress, elastic limits, and the resistance of materials to creep and fatigue are of basic importance in engineering. Creep is a slow, permanent deformation that results from a steady force acting on a material. Materials at high temperatures usually suffer from this deformation. The gradual loosening of bolts and the deformation of components of machines and engines are all the examples of creep. In many cases the slow deformation stops because deformation eliminates the force causing the creep. Creep extended over a long time finally leads to the rupture of the material. After you read Questions 1. What are the external forces causing the elastic deformation of materials? Describe those forces that change the form and size of materials. 2. What are the results of external forces? 3. What kinds of deformation are the combinations of tension and compression? 4. What is the result of tension? What happens if the elastic limit of material is exceeded under tension? 5. What do we call fatigue? When does it occur? What are the results of fatigue? 6. What do we call creep? When does this type of permanent deformation take place? What are the results of creep? Tasks 1.Find the following in the text: 1.
2.Translate into English the following sentences: 1.
