WHAT’S MANAGEMENT?

1. Read and translate the text:

Management can be described as the process undertaken by one or more persons to co-ordinate the activities of other persons to achieve results not attainable by any person acting alone.

Management includes some basic resources: human, monetary, physical and information. Human resources include managerial talent and labour. Monetary resources are the financial capital used by the organization. Physical resources include raw materials, office and production facilities, and equipment.

Information resources are data needed to make effective decisions. The manager's job involves combining and co-ordinating these various resources to achieve the organisation's goals.

The most important responsibility of a manager at any level is decision making. Decision making can be broken down into five components:

1) recognizing the problem;

2) defining and analysing the problem;

3) evaluating alternative solutions;

4) choosing the most favourable solution;

5) implementing the approach chosen.

The four key functions of management are:

- planning

- organising

- directing

- controlling

Management then can be defined as a set of activities, including planning and decision making, organizing, leading and controlling, directed at an organization's human, financial, physical and information resources, with the aim of achieving organizational goals is efficient and effective manner.
