Theme 16. Particularities of telephone calls in Russia and in Britain

The telephone is one of the most important business instruments used in an office, so it is essential that it is used skilfully. A pleasing voice, resonant, low, well-controlled and firm, is a decided asset and should be developed.

Telephone Rules to Be Remembered

• Be prompt in answering the telephone.

• Avoid being misunderstood - speak directly into the mouthpiece and pronounce words and numbers distinctly.

• When answering, give the firm’s name immediately, and then your own name.

• If the person wanted is not in, offer to take a message for him.

• Write down every message and put it in a conspicuous place on the desk of the person for whom it is intended.

• Check the accuracy of names and numbers receive it over the phone by repeating them very clearly.

Be brief, courteous and businesslike.

• Keep an index of frequently called numbers beside the telephone.

• Consult the telephone directory for information about long-distance calls, regular charges, reversed charges, reduced rates, and other special services.

2.- Алло, секретарь г-на Тернера. Что вы хотите?

— Г-н Тернер будет говорить с Вами через минуту. Он сейчас занят. Вы подождете?

- Извините. Вы ошиблись номером. У нас таких нет.

Грамматика

Притяжательные местоимения указывают на принадлежность  («чьё?»). Присоединяемая форма употребляется с последующим существительным, не присоединяемая - изолированно.

It ’ s my book. - Это моя книга.

  The book is mine - Книга моя.

Общими значениями возвратных местоимений являются значения «себя», «себе», «самостоятельно». При переводе возвратность часто передается глаголами с частицей «ся», «сь».

Mary introduced herself to colleagues. – Мэри представилась коллегам.

Возвратное местоимение, употребляемое с предлогом by, имеет значение «самостоятельно», «один».

Have you cleaned the room (by) yourself?- Ты убрал комнату сам /

She stayed at home by herself. - Она осталась дома одна.

Упражнение 1. Вставьте в предложения присоединяемую или абсолютную формы притяжательных местоимений.
