Exercise 2. Translate the following sentences into Russian. Define the function of modal verbs.

В условных предложениях придаточное предложение выражает условие, а главное –следствие этого условия. Придаточные предложения условия вводятся следующими союзами и союзными словами:

if - если

even if - даже если

if only - если только

if … not; unless - если … не

in case (that) - если; в том случае если

even though - даже если

providing that; provided that - при условии, что; если

suppose (that); granted (that) - предполагая, что; если

granting (that); given that - в том случае; если

on condition (that) - при условии, что; если

Для выражения предположительного действия, относящегося к настоящему времени, в придаточных предложениях употребляется форма Past Simple, а в главном предложении – аналитическая форма сослагательного наклонения с инфинитивом (would / should) + do

If life existed on Venus, we should know this.

Если бы на Венере существовала жизнь, мы бы знали это.

Для выражения предположительного условия, относящегося к прошедшему времени, в придаточном предложении употребляется форма Past Perfect, а в главном предложении – аналитическая форма сослагательного наклонения с перфектным инфинитивом would / should have done.

Иногда вместо вспомогательных глаголов would/ should в главном предложении могут употребляться модальные глаголы might, could с перфектным инфинитивом  (might (could) have done).

Ifhe had come in time yesterday, they would have completed the experiment.

Если бы он вчера пришел вовремя, они бы закончили опыт.

If he had been given an opportunity, the work might have been finished.

Если бы ему дали возможность, работа, вероятно, была бы закончена.

Условные предложения могут быть бессоюзными, в этом случае наблюдается изменение порядка слов (инверсия) и сказуемое или его часть ставится перед подлежащим.

Should she see you here, she would not like it.

Если бы она тебя здесь увидела, ей бы это не понравилось.

 

But for your help, I should not have completed my experiment.

Если бы не ваша помощь, я бы не завершил свой эксперимент.
