Употребление артиклей с именами собственными

 

1. С именами и фамилиями людей артикль не употребляется.

 

Lucy is my best friend. Mr. Smith is responsible for marketing.

Люси – мой лучший друг. Мистер Смит отвечает за маркетинг.

 

2. Для обозначения всех членов семьи используется определенный артикль и фамилия.

 

The Browns live next door.

Брауны живут по соседству.

 

Неопределенный артикль + фамилия употребляются для обозначения одного члена семьи или неизвестного человека (со значением «некий»).

 

He is a Romanov. A Sokolov is waiting for you downstairs.

Он – Романов. (один из) Некто Соколов ждет вас внизу.

 

3. При наличии определения употребляется тот артикль, который необходим в соответствии с общими правилами.

 

He is a true Romanov. He is not the Romanov I knew.

Он – истинный Романов. Он – не тот Романов, которого я знал.

 

4. Когда имя собственное становится нарицательным, оно употребляется с тем артиклем, который требуется в соответствии с базовыми правилами.

 

He drives a Renault. The Renault he bought last week is already in repairs. He is a typical Casanova.

Он водит Рено (машину марки Рено). Тот Рено, который он купил на прошлой неделе, уже в ремонте. Он – типичный Казанова.

 

5. С обращениями, званиями, титулами, профессиями, словами, обозначающими родственные отношения, артикль не употребляется.

 

Hello, Watson! In Trafalgar square there is the column of Admiral Nelson. Uncle Henry left me some money. Professor Higgins taught Elisa to speak good English.

Привет, Ватсон! На Трафальгарской площади есть колонна адмирала Нельсона. Дядя Генри оставил мне немного денег. Профессор Хиггинс научил Элизу говорить на хорошем английском.
