Прилагательные и наречия, образующие степени сравнения не по общему правилу

Ряд прилагательных и наречий образуют степени сравнения не по общему правилу, значит, их надо запомнить, тем более что они являются наиболее употребимыми (Таблица 5). Особого внимания требуют слова mech и little, во-первых, потому, что они могут выступать с а м о с т о я т е л ь н о как в роли прилагательных, так и наречий. Во-вторых, их сравнительная и превосходная степени, как мы уже знаем, используются для образования сравнительной и превосходной степеней других прилагательных и наречий. Поэтому им отводится отдельный параграф (§ 107).

Обратите внимание на перевод следующих слов: either,neither. Either— имеет два произношения: ['aɪðə] или ['i:ðə] 1) также, тоже (в отрицательных предложениях: Idon't like him either — Он мне тоже не нравится) 2) любой (Either day is OK — Любой день хорош или: Все дни хороши. We can use either technique — Мы можем использовать любой метод) either...or — или... или, либо... либо (Either you leave this house or I'll call the police — Или вы покинете этот дом, или я вызову полицию). Эти слова имеют и отрицательную форму: neither 1) ни один (из) + не (к сказуемому) (Neither boy realized the difficulty — Ни один из мальчиков не осознал трудность. Neither of the possible ways is simple — Ни один из возможных способов не является простым) 2) а также + не (к сказуемому) — стоит в начале предложения, которое следует за отрицательным предложением (Neither could we write a good program — А также мы не смогли написать хорошую программу) neither...nor — ни... ни (Ineither smoke nor drink — Яне курю и не пью. Scientific attitude

The scientific attitude is as useful in running a business as in running a scientific laboratory. In both, it is fact, not fancy, that enables us to think straight and find what really works.

The scientific method helps us meet new situations without making fools of ourselves. And up to a point,every situation in life is a new situation — different in time, different in place, and different in the individuals and things involved. We cannot use the scientific method to make all our decisions, but when we take our most important ones,we should remember that it is the most useful method known to help us turn up facts which we need to make sound decisions that will apply to present conditions.

I made it a rule to forebear all direct contradiction to the sentiments of others, and all positive assertion of my own. I even forbad myself the use of every word or expression in the language that imported a fixed opinion, such as "certainly," "undoubtedly," etc.

When another asserted something that I thought an error, 1 denied myself the pleasure to contradict him abruptly and show immediately some absurdity in his proposition, and in my answer I began by observing that in certain cases or circumstances his opinion would be right but in the present case there seemed to me some difference, etc. I soon found the advantage of this change in my manner, conversations went on more pleasantly. The modest way in which I proposed my opinions procured them a readier reception and less contradiction; I had less mortification when I was in the wrong, and I more easily prevailed with others to give up their mistakes and join with me when I was in the right.
