Союзные (соединительные) местоимения (Conjunctive Pronouns)

Союзные местоимения who (кто), whom (кого), whose (чей), what (что, какой), which (который, какой, кто, что)присоединяют при­даточные предложения подлежащие, сказуемые и дополнительные к главному предложению и являются при этом членами придаточного

предложения. По форме и переводу на русский язык они совпадают с вопросительными местоимениями. Сравните употребление what и that в сложноподчиненном пред­ложении:

1. Союз that (что)только присоединяет придаточное к главному предложению, не является членом придаточного предложения, и в русском, и в английском языках в придаточном дополнительном предложении может опускаться.

Союзное местоимение what (что)не только присоединяет прида­точное предложение к главному, но и является членом придаточного предложения, и поэтому не может опускаться.

I know that he has brought a new dictionary for you. Я знаю, что он принес вам новый словарь.

I know what he has brought for you. Я знаю, что (что именно он принес для вас (вам).

2. Часто what и that переводятся словосочетанием то, что.

That he is ill now is known to everybody. То, что он болен сейчас, известно всем.

What he said is of great interest to us. То, что он сказал, представляет для нас огромный интерес.

 

Относительные (соединительные) местоимения (Relative Pronouns)

Относительные местоимения who (whom), which, that в значе­нии который присоединяют придаточные определительные предложения к главному предложению и являются членами придаточного определительного предложения.

Who (whom) который, которые (по отношению к людям).

There are many people who do not smoke. Есть много людей, которые не курят.

Which который, которые (по отношению к неодушевленным предметам и животным).

The library is in the building which (that) stands at the corner. Библиотека находится в здании, которое стоит на углу.

That который, которые (по отношению к одушевленным и неодушевленным предметам).

My friend that (whom) you saw yesterday is a good doctor. Мой друг, которого вы вчера видели, хороший врач.

Упражнение 1. Переведите на русский язык, обращая внимание на местоимение it:

1. It is cold. 2. It is warm today. 3. It was rainy yesterday. 4. It is a nice summer dress. 5. It often snows in winter. 6. It has been raining since 3 o’clock. 7. It was freezing. 8. Упражнение 2. Переведите на английский язык, употребляя местоимение it:
