FAMILY

I.

1.

Let’s talk about family. What role does it play in your life? (What is family for you? Why is family important for you?)

2.

Let’s talk about family relationships. What can you tell about your family? Do you get on well with your parents?

There is a wise saying “Blood is thicker than water”. It means that our friends are unstable while our parents and relatives stay with us all our life. I think friends don’t understand us as much as our parents. In happy, friendly, united families parents are honest with their children without moralizing and bossing them. And children in their turn try to be honest and loving. Members of such families treat one another with understanding and compassion. They always share household chores. Children in such families feel safe at home. They trust their parents, share their secrets and problems, ask parents for useful advice and rely on them. My family is important for me. We have close relations; we trust and value one another. I resemble my father. My father Sergei is a businessman. He is honest, hardworking and generous. We have much in common, that’s why we are best friends. My mother Helen is a shop-assistant. My mum is a pretty woman. She is kind and patient. She has a lot of household chores and I always try to help her. Sometimes we argue because of my marks but I never lie to my parents. I know that I can rely on them. They give me confidence in my future. I have many remote relatives: grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. I visit them very often. For me my family is the only place where I can find support and relaxation.

1.

Do you agree that family ties are the strongest? Comment on the saying “Blood is thicker than water”.

I absolutely agree with a wise saying “Blood is thicker than water”. Our friends are unstable while our parents and relatives stay with us all our life. Our parents know us well, so they can give us some valuable advice. I think friends don’t understand us as well as our parents and relatives. Our parents will never let us down.

2.

Do you agree that children should be brought up strictly? Why (not)?

It’s common knowledge that family is a crucial instrument for the development of a child’s personality. That’s why it is necessary to live in a friendly and happy family where everyone is loving, caring and understanding. In my opinion, when a child is brought up in a friendly family, he will become a responsible person with a strong character. But parents should be strict if their children break moral laws.

3.

Do you think it is necessary to have family traditions?

4.

Do you have your own family traditions?

5.

Are there any family traditions that you follow?

I think that it is necessary to have family traditions. They help to unite family members. We also have some family traditions. We celebrate the birthdays of each member of the family. All my relatives gather together at one big table. It’s also our family tradition to spend summer holidays in the country.

6.

Are there any things that you do with your parents together?

I should say that my parents are very busy, but at the weekends we try to spend time together. I help my mother about the house. On Sunday we usually watch TV and have dinner together. Sometimes we visit our relatives and friends.

7.

Are you on good terms with your parents and grandparents?

First of all I should say that there is no problem of generation gap in my family. We try to be understanding, caring and loving. I can rely on my relatives in any situation. We can discuss everything and try to trust each other. So, we are on good terms.

Your friend has got acquainted with a girl/boy and wants to know her/his character better. Give him/her a piece of advice on how he/she can do it.

If you want to know one’s character better you should spend a lot of time with this person. You can do the shopping, walk, visit other people or chat together. You will see this person in different situations. You just need to be very attentive and notice what he is saying or doing. His habits, deeds and words will tell a lot about this person’s character. I wish you good luck.

Let’s talk about your future career. What would you like to become? (What kind of job would you like to have in future? What is your idea of an ideal job? What would you like to do in future? What is your career goal?)

As you know, our modern world makes a person be flexible and mobile, creative and inventive. Modern life makes a person broaden his horizons, use modern technologies and learn foreign languages. To get knowledge people need education, they need to turn theoretical knowledge into practical skills. Nowadays good education means a good job.

I am leaving school soon and I’m thinking about possible careers and jobs. It’s very difficult to choose your future career because there are many alternatives and you don’t know where to start.

We usually sat that all roads are open before our school-leavers. While at school I have changed my mind a lot of times.

Some pupils choose their future profession under the influence of their parents or friends. In my opinion, the final choice should depend on what you are interested in. For me, interesting and creative work is the most important thing. I want to enjoy my work and get satisfaction from it. And at the same time I’d like to have a well-paid job.

I made my choice last year. I want to enter the Belarusian State University.

I am going to be a lawyer. Lawyers don’t only punish people for different crimes but try to prevent them. They help people to find the right road in life. The lawyers protect the rights and interests of citizens and organizations.

I’d like to be a journalist. They tell people the truth and provide them with news and true information. A journalist must be interested in many subjects and must be a well-educated person. They try to solve different problems with the help of mass media.

I want to work in an advertising company. Advertising products and services is very important for modern society nowadays. It helps people to make the right choice and to save money at the same time.

I have a dream to be a doctor. This is an interesting and noble profession. I want to help people who face health problems. Doctors should be kind and attentive to people. It’s one of the most demanded professions in the world.

I’d like to be a teacher. Teaching can be called the greatest of the arts. It’s a great responsibility to bring up children. Teachers should be well-educated and well-informed. They help their pupils to understand the world we live in.

Luckily my main interest is not money but the belief that my profession is very important for our society. This noble profession demands constant creativity and erudition. I think I will do my best to be tactful, self-confident and objectively-minded. Of course, to become a good specialist I should be devoted to my profession. I should be persistent and hard-working.

In conclusion I should say that working is the best way through which people can be helpful and they can enjoy life.

2. Dress smartly and formally. It will show that you are well-brought and responsible

3. Enter the room with a friendly smile.

4. Look at the person you are talking to.

And I wish you good luck.

Mass Media

I.

1.

Let`s talk about mass media. What types of mass media do you know and which of them are the most popular among teenagers?

2.

Let`s talk about mass media: TV, newspapers, radio. Which of these does (do) your family like (prefer, use). Why?

Mass media are basically TV, radio, newspapers and magazines- means of communication which are a vital part of our daily lives. They inform and educate, question and entertain. They also influence the way we see the world.

Every day millions of newspapers and magazines are published all over the world. There are different national and local papers, dailies, weeklies and monthlies. They satisfy different interests and tastes. The press informs the readers of the news at home and abroad. There are also articles on sports, art, music, culinary.

Radio and TV inform people, give wonderful possibilities for education and broaden our horizons. We become better informed by watching documentaries, science programs and discussions.

TV is a favourite mass medium in my family. It gives my family the opportunity to see the best actors, sport matches, to meet famous people. We learn about different countries, people and their customs, traditions, jobs and problems. TV helps us to relax after a hard day. We watch different talk- shows, TV games, concerts, feature films and serials.

But I should also mention the disadvantages of TV. It takes a lot of time and makes us lazy. TV can be harmful for our health, especially for our eyes. Some programs and films are violent. And there are a lot of advertisements which make us buy things we don`t need.

I think TV is the most popular mass medium but we should choose only useful programs.

We have come into a digital age. Nowadays the most popular mass medium is the Internet. You can find computers, laptops, iPads and mobiles in every house. A lot of people can’t live without the Internet. We chat, find useful information and the latest news in the Internet.

In conclusion I should say that nowadays you can be informed even if you live in the Sahara desert.

Do you agree that we can`t live without communication? Why?

Is there any means of communication you can`t live without? Why (not)?

Travelling and Tourism

I.

1.

Let`s talk about travelling and tourism. What types of tourism do you know? Which of them do you prefer? Why?

2.

Let`s talk about travelling. What role does it play in your life?

3.

Let`s talk about travelling. Do you like travelling? Why?

Travelling nowadays is an essential part of modern life. Rest and recreation are as important as work.

People travel to see other countries and their sights, to discover new things and other ways of life, to meet different people, taste different food, visit museums and art galleries. Some people travel for business or just for pleasure. So, it`s difficult to imagine modern life without travelling.

Nowadays people can travel in different ways: on foot, by train, by plane, by ship or by car. Travelling is a highly organized business in many countries. There are comfortable cars and buses, splendid roads, huge ships and jet- planes. People choose the way of travelling according to their likings and financial possibilities. All means of travelling have their advantages and disadvantages.

Travelling by air is the most convenient but the most expensive. Travelling by train is slower but you enjoy the comfort and pleasure of relaxation. Sea voyages are very popular as pleasure trips. While travelling by car you don`t need to buy tickets and you can plan your trip.

There are many types of tourism: adventure tourism, agritourism, cultural tourism, educational tourism, health or culinary tourism and a lot more.

You can choose any type of tourism according to your taste. Sometimes you don’t even need money for traveling. Let’s take armchair tourism. You may stay at home and with the help of TV or the Internet you can visit any country you want.

Nowadays even space tourism has become a reality. There are a lot of people who want to fly into space and to visit other planets.

As for me, I would like to combine educational, cultural, culinary and shopping types of tourism and to go to Britain. I would go there by plane because it`s fast and comfortable. This trip will give me a chance to try famous British food (for example, puddings), to do theshopping in the most luxurious British shops (for example, Harrods), to practise my English and to see the most famous British sights: the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey and others. I just hope I`ll go there one day.

Weather and Climate

Are you weather dependent?

You know, weather is connected with atmospheric pressure and temperature. If the weather is nice, people are calm and happy. But bad weather influences our mood, emotions and even the physical state. Some people, especially, the old are weather dependent. As for me, I’m not weather dependent. I am young and I have a good health. But on some days when I feel tired and when the weather is cloudy, rainy or windy I may feel bad.
