The Most Popular British Writers

William Shakespeare and Charles Dickens remain two of the most popular and widely known British writers all over the world. Dickens began his writing career as a journalist, and all his novels were first published serially in periodicals. Many of his works highlight the injustice of 19th century social institutions and inequalities between the rich and the poor. His most famous works include "Oliver Twist" and "David Copperfield". As to Shakespeare in addition to writing 35 known plays, he wrote 154 sonnets and sometimes acted in small parts in his own plays. He is known to have played the Ghost in "Hamlet". His best known plays include "King Lear", "A Midsummer night's dream" and "Romeo and Juliet". The Bronte sister, Charlotte (1816-55), Emily (1818-48) and Anne (1820-49), were three talented 19th century women novelists whose works are regarded as classics today. Charlotte Bronte is best known for her novel "Jane Eyre". The novels of Jane Austen are known for their subtlety of observation and irony, together with their insights into the provincial life of the middle-class in the early part of 19th century. Her works include "Emma", "Pride and Prejudice" and others.

Dancing is a way of life

My name is Maria Shishkina. I am 16 years old. I was born in Cheboksary, Russia and I still live here. I have a family but it isn’t big. It consists of my mother, my father and me. I study in Lyceum #2 in the 10th grade. My class specializes in Law. We extend our knowledge of Social Science, English and the Russian language. I’m going to be a lawyer in the future. I have a hobby. My hobby is dancing. I join a dance group. It is very big. Young people of different ages train and enjoy dancing there. I have a skilled choreographer. For me she is not only a teacher, she is also the person who can give advice or help in difficult situations. She has been dancing for about 30 years and she has a lot of experience. All the costumes for our group she sews herself. Everyone in the group loves and respects her. I have been dancing for 10 years. Every day my dance classes last 3 hours. I can’t live without dancing and I always miss it when I have to take a break from the lessons because of health problems or vacation. Dancing plays the most important role in my life and I can’t imagine my life without it. I have many friends in my dance group. We like to spend our free time together. For example, we go on picnics or go for a walk together. Our dance group is well known in our city. We always take part in different concerts. For example, we danced at the opening ceremonies of the 5th European Cup Race Walking in 2003 and the 22nd World Cup Race Walking in 2008. This year our dance group celebrates the twentieth anniversary. The concert dedicated to it will be held in April, and I will perform dances there. I think that dancing gives me a lot. It gives me flexibility, plasticity, good posture and positive emotions. Maybe for me dancing isn’t just a hobby. It is a way of life and even the life itself.

Madame Tussaud’s Museum

Every visitor to London knows who Madame Tussaud is or was. And almost every visitor has seen her, an old lady of 81, standing at the entrance of her own exhibition. She is made of wax, like all the models of people in this museum. There are a lot of halls in the museum. The first room is the “Garden Party”. Beneath a star-spangled sky, under an oak-tree, figures from the worlds of sports and the media enjoy a friendly drink and chat. There are statues of A. Schwarzenegger, E. Taylor and others there. “200 Years” room covers the history of Madame Tussaud’s over the last two centuries, and shows the developing of new technology during that time. There are also other rooms, such as: “Legends and Superstars”, rooms with popular music singers, the members of royal families and military leaders. There is the “Chamber of Horrors” which amuses visitors very much. “The Spirit of London” is a magnificent journey through London’s history. The cabs travel past the figure of W. Shakespeare, Sir Christopher Wren, who directs the building of St Paul’s Cathedral. It’s not easy to tell about all interesting things one can see in the museum. This is the place that is worth visiting.

Different Types of Hotels

When you go to stay in a hotel there are several different considerations. One of them, of course, is price. It's not a concern for everyone, but most people are budget-conscious and can't just spend whatever they want to on accommodations. With that being the case, you'll have to determine what fits within your budget and what you can expect from a hotel in that price range. Where budget accommodations are concerned you won't pay a lot but you won't get a lot, either. Most of these hotels are older, and although they are clean there are anything but fancy. The linens and fixtures might be a bit worn and they won't have the look and feel of the higher priced hotels. You don't usually get any 'freebies,' either, although you might be treated to a simple breakfast and/or a newspaper included in the price.

Luxury hotels are a far different story from budget hotels. They cost much more, but you also get many more amenities than you would in a place where you pay considerably less. You can expect food, newspapers, free phone calls, better television channel selections, and more pampering. These hotels often have pools, spas, free room service, massages, robes and slippers, and other amenities that you wouldn't otherwise get. You are generally given whatever you ask for, within reason, and the people there carry your bags and do everything that they can to ensure that you are happy. It's very important to them that you have a good stay and that you return in the future.

A lot of people stay in middle-of-the-road hotels. These places offer much more than the budget hotels, but they don't come close to what the luxury hotels provide. You'll get some freebies there, but you won't get the pampering and the do-anything-for-you attitude that you'll get in the luxury hotels. That doesn't seem to be required, though, because these standard hotels are still very popular. It gives people the feeling that they are staying in a nice hotel without requiring them to spend such an excessive amount of money. The fixtures in these hotels will be newer than the budget hotels, as will the linens. They will be nice places overall, but they won't have the spas and free massages and other treatments that a lot of the luxury options provide. For travellers on a tight budget, these hotels might be too costly, as well.
