UNIT 1. ABOUT MYSELF

MY FAMILY

Before I start talking about my family let me introduce myself. I am Sveta Petrenko. I am 17. I have left school this year. I was born in Krasnodar, so I have been living in Krasnodar since my childhood.

And now I am going to tell you about my family. We are a family of five. We think we are a large and friendly family. So we are happy to be living together and are getting on all right.

To begin with, I am going to talk first about my father. His name is Sergey Petrovich, he is 45. He works as a surgeon in a hospital. He is neither old, nor young. He is a good-looking man, handsome, rather thin with dark brown hair just beginning to go grey. He is a very sociable person. What I don't like about my dad is that he is always busy. Very often he works overtime. He is a bread-maker in our family. He is fond of going to the country on week-ends, because he enjoys working in the garden.

My mother's name is Galina Nickolayevna. She is three years younger than my father. She works as a teacher at a nursery school. My mother is rather slim and pretty, she is always elegant and smart. In short, she is a pleasant-looking woman of about 40. She always has a lot of work to do both at school and about the house. She is fond of her work and spends a lot of time there. But she has to cook the food for all the family at home. Shopping and cooking is nearly half a day's work for her. But my granny and I are in a habit of helping her about the house.

Boris is my elder brother. He is six years senior to me. So he is 23 already. He has graduated from the University and he is an economist by profession now. Boris is married. His wife is a journalist. They are three in the family. They have got a child, my nephew. It is a lovely little boy of two with golden hair and dark brown eyes and a spirit that is always bright and happy, full of joy and gaiety.

And finally a few words about my granny. To tell you the truth, she is my best friend. She always listens to my endless stories about my friends and my school life. She is retired on pension now but in her youth and her older age she worked as a teacher in a school. I must admit, she is a very understanding person.

Put it into a few words, we are a united and friendly family.

MY FAMILY

Before I start speaking about my family, let me introduce myself. My name is Lena Petrova. I was born in 1991. My home town is Krasnodar. Now I am 18. I have finished school this year. Everybody knows it's rather difficult to tell someone's biography when you are only eighteen. But I'll try. First of all, I want to say that I am an ordinary girl. People say I am a pretty girl. I am slim, tall. I go in for sports because it's my goal to have a very good figure. My hair is
long and fair, the eyes are blue. I have a snub nose and full lips. Certainly I have a lot of interests such as sport, dancing and a very popular one, I mean the computer. I finished training courses in computer and I suppose it will help me to study at the University. I took after my father in character that's why I'd like to start telling you about my family with my Dad. He is 42. He works at the Factory as the Works Manager. He graduated from the Moscow University. He
is generous and moderate, though resolute, he's tactful. He is always busy. But he often finds some spare time to spend it in the swimming-pool with my brother, and me, playing tennis in summer and hockey in winter. I guess, that's why he looks both athletic and distinguished. To
tell the truth, I haven't many opportunities to see him very often.

As for my mother I am very happy to look like her because she is a beautiful woman. She doesn't look her age. She always says: "A woman is as old as she looks". She is a doctor. She works at the hospital. Her colleagues say that my Mama is very efficient and qualified, very sociable but not talkative and has good manners. That's true. Then I have an elder brother.
Of course, I love him very much. He is a nice guy, very honest. He is a student. Sometimes it seems to me my brother is a bit stubborn. Nevertheless he is pleasant to deal with. He looks like my father. He is handsome, neither slim nor stout. He wears a beard and moustache. I hate
this and I'm going to present him with a new and expensive shaving-cream for his birthday. His hair is dark and eyes are brown. He has a straight nose like my Dad and thin lips. He isn't married yet.

And finally my Granny. Her name is Elena too. I took my name after my grandmother. She is a pleasant-looking woman in her sixties, with soft brown hair and warm dark-brown eyes. She is kind and gentle, but she manages our house very well. My mother is, of course, a clever woman, but a little unpractical, and she needs my granny's advice, because my grandmother, on the other hand, is very practical and full of common sense.

That is a story of my family. We all live together in a four-room flat. We quarrel very seldom, but sometimes it happens. We love each other and try to live a happy life.

WHO'S WHO IN KING'S ABBOT

Our village, King's Abbot, is, I imagine, very much like any other village. Our big town is Cranchester, nine miles away. We are rich in unmarried ladies and retired (в отставке) military officers. There are only two houses of any importance in King's Abbot. One is King's Paddock, left to Mrs Ferrars by her late husband. The other, Fernly Park, is owned by Roger Ackroyd. Ackroyd has always interested me. He is not really a country squire. He is a man of nearly fifty years of age, genial of manner. He is, in fact, the life and soul of our peaceful village of King's Abbot. Now when Roger Ackroyd was a lad of twenty-one he fell in love with, and married a beautiful woman some five or six years senior. Her name was Paton, and she was a widow (вдова) with one child. The history of the marriage was short and painful. She succeeded in drinking herself into her grave (пьянство свело ее в могилу) four years after her marriage.

In the years that followed, Ackroyd showed no disposition to make a second matrimonial adventure (попытка второго брака). His wife's child by her first marriage was only seven years old when his mother died. He is now twenty-five. Ackroyd has always regarded him as his own son, but he has been a wild lad and a continual source (источник) of worry and trouble to his stepfather. Nevertheless we are all very fond of Ralph Paton in King's Abbot. He is such a good-looking youngster.

VIII. Ответьте на вопросы.

1. Is the village King's Abbot far from Cranchester?

2. How many houses of any importance are there in King's Abbot?

3. Who is Roger Ackroyd?

4. What can you tell about his character?

5. Why, in your opinion, does the author call him the soul of a village?

6. Was his marriage happy or not?

7. How long was he married to Mrs. Paton?

8. Did he want to be married a second time?

9. How old is his stepson (пасын o к)

10. What is his character like?

11. Who does he take in character after?

MY FRIEND

I am so happy to tell you about my friend. We have been friends for some years. It was during my summer holidays. I went to the camp on the Black sea coast. It was my first time at the camp. At the very beginning of my stay there I missed my Mum and Dad very much. One evening I was sitting on the bench in the park and thinking about my parents. A beautiful girl came up to me. She said that her name was Olga. It was her second time at the camp. Very soon we became close friends and we are very friendly till now.

Olga is 17. She is tall and slim, with big dark eyes and black hair. She is fond of sports. That's why Olga can walk all day long and never feels tired. She is sociable. She speaks little but she doesn't talk at random. She finished school last year and tried to enter the University but failed. She is very hard-working. She took a training course where she studied English and computers. Now she works as a secretary for a firm and continues to learn English.

This year she is going to enter a foreign languages department of the University again. I am sure she will manage. My friend is good-hearted and has a sense of humour. She knows a lot of funny stories and she always tells them. She likes music very much.

We have much in common. As for music our tastes differ: I am keen on pop-music, but Olga enjoys jazz, though it doesn't matter. And now I want to tell you how we like to spend our free time.

In the evening we go for a walk, listen to music, look through fashion journals. On the days off we go to the parties, museums, theatres.

She is very kind and sweet. Last month she bought a niсе puppy. Now she goes for a walk with her little pet friend. At last I want to add that she is always busy. I like her very much and I want to be her best friend forever.

MY WORKING DAY

I want to describe you my daily actions which I did, more or less regularly, on weekdays during my final year at school. There was little variation in my life then, all days except weekends looked very much the same.

On weekdays my working day began early in the morning. As a matter of fact, I am not an early-riser, that's why I hate getting up early, but I got used to it, I usually got up at about 7 o'clock. Then I did my morning exercises and went to the bathroom to wash my face and hands with a soap and clean my teeth with a toothpaste. I didn't take a shower in the morning; I generally did it late in the evening before going to bed. At a quarter past seven I was ready to have my breakfast. As a rule, I had a quick light breakfast which consisted of a cup of coffee or tea, a boiled egg or an omelette and a cheese or sausage sandwich. After breakfast I put on my coat, took my bag and left for school.

As my school is not far from my house, it took me 10 minutes to get there. I never took a bus or a trolley-bus on my way to school, I usually walked there.

Six or seven lessons a day was the ordinary timetable. I seldom had lunch in the canteen, because I usually had packed one in my bag (an apple and a sandwich).

The classes at school were over at about three o'clock. Twice a week I stayed at school later to play table-tennis or was busy with the English language club.

When I came home my mother always had dinner ready just in time. Then I changed my school uniform and had a rest. While resting, I listened to the music or looked through the newspapers or magazines. Then I started doing my home assignments. It took me about five hours to cope with my homework properly. I normally finished doing my homework at 10 o'clock in the evening. So I hadn't much time for television and friends, because I had to work hard at all the subjects during my final year at school. But sometimes I managed to see an interesting film.

I did well in most school subjects without any effort. Besides I managed to help my mother about the house and do our shopping, go to the library and have private lessons in English in order to improve it.

And I must admit, that school life was a very interesting page of my life. I had good friends at school and some lessons were interesting.

After supper I usually relaxed for some time and then went on with my homework.

As a rule, I went to bed at about 11 o'clock or even later.

MY WORKING DAY

First, let me introduce myself. My name is Nick. I am a student of Krasnodar State University of Culture and Arts. This year I have finished school and entered the University. I want to become a lawyer.

I want to tell you about my usual day. It starts at 7 o'clock in the morning. It's rather easy to get up so early in summer. And, though, I am not a lazy-bones, it's, very difficult to get up at seven in winter. I regularly do my morning exercises. Then I take a cold shower. I am a good-eater and usually it takes me almost half an hour to have breakfast. Then I put оn my coat, take my bag and leave home at 7.45. My University is near my house. I'd rather say it's in 5 minutes walk from my place. The lessons begin at 8 o’clock sharp. I never miss classes. I attend University every day. Our University is situated in the centre of the city.

We study different subjects at university, such as mathematics, history, literature, philosophy, psychology and others. I think it is important for a student to operate a computer.

After University I go home. I have a lot to do every day. But first of all I have dinner. I have no time to go for a walk on my weekdays. I follow the principle that a good discipline will help me to study well and achieve more in my adult life. That's why I try to prepare my home work before my parents come home.

My Dad is an economist. My Mother is a French teacher. We like to spend our evenings together. After supper we discuss our everyday problems. Sometimes my parents are busy or go out. The other days friends come to see me. We watch films or listen to music together.

Now you can see that I am really very busy. My working day starts at 7 a.m. and ends at 11 p.m. But in spite of that I am happy.

MY HOBBY

There are different hobbies in the world. The most popular one is music. In the evening you may play the guitar. That would be nice. Or you may be interested in reading. It is very exciting, especially when you read the book in the original. You try to understand the meaning of new words from the contents, if you can. But sometimes this isn't possible. Then you use a dictionary... Travelling is a thrilling hobby, isn't it? When it is fairly cool in London or Madrid you may go to your country-house not far from Repino. You may ask me what I am driving at... I don't know whether you will like my hobby. For someone it's a hard work which takes a lot of time and skills. For me it's an interesting spare time work. I mean a computer. What is a computer? For fans like me it's a very specific kind of a counting machine. It can do arithmetic problems faster than any person alive. By means of electric circuit it can find the answer to a very difficult and complicated problem in a few seconds. A computer can "remember" information you give to it. It stores the information in its, "memory" as long as it is necessary. We used to think of a computer as a large machine with many buttons and flashing lights that took up a whole room. But today computers are becoming smaller and smaller and are even being put inside other devices. I am interested in the history of computers. The facts prove that until 1940, developments in electronics took place at a comparatively slow pace. In 1955 computers began to use transistors. In that year IBM company marketed a great number of computers with this new device. Now I know a lot about computers. I began collecting this information at school, then I decided to take a training programme. I have my computer lessons three times a week. Our group has been working for two years and we have taken part in the regional competitions. So, you can imagine our happiness when our team won a victory over a very skilled team from Odessa.

I believe that my hobby will become my future profession. The types of computers available are as different as the types of musical instruments or books you read, or stamps you collect. But there is another similarity between learning to play the musical instrument and learning to use the computer - you must practice every day.

I don't know what my friend is going to be after finishing school. He may choose the profession of a doctor, a policeman or a driver. I am certain that everybody realizes the necessity of using computers in different jobs and situations. That is why I want to connect my future profession with computers.

to play the guitar - играть на гитаре; exciting - волную щий; in the original - в подлиннике; contents - содержа ние; to allow — позволять; thrilling — захватывающий; to drive at - клонить, намекать; fan - болельщик, люби тель; to count - считать; alive - живой; arithmetic- задача; electric circuit - электрическая цепь; complicated - сложный; button - кнопка; to flash - вспы хивать; device - устройство; to prove - доказывать; comparatively slow - сравнительно медленный; расе - темп; to market - выпустить на рынок; to take part in — принимать участие в; regional - областной; competition - соревнование; available - имеющийся в распоряжении; stamp - марка; similarity - сходство; to practice - практиковаться; to be certain - быть уверенным; necessity - необходимость.       :

HOT AIR BALOONS

Man always wanted to fly. The easiest thing to do that, as a man in England thought 800 years ago, was to make a pair of wings from chicken feathers. He made feather wings, fixed them to his shoulders and jumped into the air from a tall building. He did not fly very far. Instead, he fell to the ground and broke every bone in his body.

The first real steps took place in France, in 1783. Two brothers, the Montgolfiers, made a very large hot air baloon. They knew that hot air rises. Why not fill a baloon with it? The baloon was made of cotton and paper. In September of that year, people came to see the baloon. They watched it carry the very first air passengers into the sky. The passengers were a sheep, a chicken and a duck. We do not know how they felt about the flight. But in eight minutes they landed successfully. UNIT 2. MY HOME

MY HOME

I would like to tell you a few words about my home. To begin with, I want to tell you that I live in Krasnodar, one of the largest cities of Russia.

Our family lives in a new flat in one of the largest newly built residential areas. We moved into our that seven years ago. It is a three-room flat on the fifth floor of an eight-storeyed building. It consists of a living-room, a study, a bedroom, a kitchen, a bathroom, two closets and a lavatory. There are two balconies in our flat: the first one is in the living room, and the second — in the bedroom. Our flat has all modern conveniences: central heating, running cold and hot water, electricity, telephone and gas. Besides, there is a lift and a garbage disposal in our building. The layout is very good, I must admit. The rooms are light, though not very large. In my opinion, it's quite a modern-looking flat. The windows face the park in front of the building and the view is really wonderful.

Our living-room is quite a big room of about 19 square meters. It is the largest room in our flat. As my parents don't like much furniture in the house, so in the living room there are two comfortable armchairs and a sofa, coffee-table and a nice thick carpet on the floor. Opposite the window there is a wall unit, but it doesn't take much space in the room. Of course there is a colour TV set, a stereo cassette-recorder and a record-player in the living-room. A nice chandelier is hanging from the ceiling and there is a standard lamp to the left of the sofa. During the day, the light comes in through the window, but at night when it gets dark, we switch on the light and draw the curtains across the windows. We like to receive our guests in this room.

And now I would like to describe our study. At first it was my daddy's room, but as I grew older, it has become mine. To tell you the truth, I am very happy to have a room for myself, that's why I always try to keep it tidy and cosy. There is a sofa, a writing table, a bookcase, a wardrobe in my room. On the wall there are some shelves full of English and Russian books. There is a radio set on the shelf and, I must confess, I like to listen to the wireless in the evening. The dressing-table is next to the sofa. In the chest of drawers I keep clean linen and handkerchiefs and in the wardrobe I keep my clothes, which I hang on coat-hangers. I have two water-colours on the wall above the sofa. They are nice copies of my favourite paintings by Serov.

Our bedroom is the smallest room in our flat. At night when my parents feel tired and sleepy, they share this room.

But the most popular and favourite place with all of us is the kitchen, as we spend most of our time there. We all are not big-eaters, but use the kitchen as a place where we can have a chat about our problems and life.

In the kitchen there are some stools, a table, a cupboard, a sink with water taps, a fridge and a gas cooker. Of course, we usually have our meals there.

We like our flat very much. It is important that our house is rather close to the underground station and we can easily get to any place we like.

A VIEW OF THE DUNE’S HOUSE

The Dunes' House was sixteen miles outside of Burlington, a narrow road was the only access to the property. We took a bus to get there. The bus turned off the main road before we reached the road to the Dunes' home, so we had to walk the last two miles. We stopped at the gate to the private road leading up to the Dunes' home. We sat on the rock and surveyed the peaceful surroundings. This place was so quiet, so beautiful.

We turned up the drive and slowly climbed what we hoped would be the last mile to the house. Soon we were out of the forest and came into a clearing, so we could see the house across a broad expanse of lawn. It was an unusual house for the area. Instead of being one story high and spread out across the lawn, this one was compact and rose like a tower on the hill. From the windows you must have a view of the entire valley.

It was a two-storied building with an attic. Its brick walls were plastered and whitewashed. It had a red tile roof and a deep veranda which ran along its front. There was a gravelled driveway to a two-car garage which was to the right of the house. One could see a wonderful orchard with blossoming apple-trees and a small vegetable garden near the house.

Nobody was in sight. So we climbed the low concrete steps and rang the entrance door bell.
