There are many different views on family life. Some people could not do without the support and love of their families. Others say it is the source of most of our problems and anxieties. Whatever the truth is, the family is definitely a powerful symbol.

The family is the most basic and ancient of all institutions, and it remains the fundamental social unit in every society. Ideally, the family provides its members with protection, companionship, security, and socialization. A vocabulary defines a family as "people who are closely related. Sociologists divide families into two general types: the nuclear family and the extended family. The nuclear family – two adults and their children – is the basic unit of social organization. An extended family includes aunts, uncles, nephews, cousins, nieces, grandparents, daughters- and sons-in law and other relatives.

Most of families start with marriages. However, nowadays there are a lot of people who prefer living together without any official registration ceremonies. Young people are to understand that it is not enough to promise to love and cherish each other, it is important to realize that they take a big step both legally and financially by deciding to get married. The modern family differs from earlier traditional forms, however, in its functions, composition, and life cycle and in the roles of husbands and wives.

People living together should be patient, understanding, careful, tender and devoted to each other and have a good sense of humour. It is great to feel support from the members of your family.

Every mother feels great affection for her children and tries to bring them up in a proper way. There are different opinions on how children should be treated if they disobey their parents, break the rules, do forbidden things, don't keep their words or promises. Some people think that parents should be patient, kind and understanding. The rules and children's behaviors are discussed in such families. But others believe that children ought to obey their parents in any situation and if they don't they should be punished. Such principles won't do a lot of good. The fear and punishment may lead to selfishness, cruelty and lies.

Every masterpiece is born in pain, so it would be a mistake to think that a happy family doesn't face any problems. However, clever and understanding parents are always ready to experiment and find the way out. For example, the teenagers are very radical in their opinions. Anything less than fulsome praise is likely to provoke hostility and alienation. A clever parent will show how excited he is by his child's originality and search for ways to take it further. In this connection, a humorous story by Emma Bombeck called “Convenient Hearing” inevitably comes to our mind.

So, what exactly is a family? The family is a relatively permanent group of people related by ancestry, marriage, or adoption, who live together, form an economic unit, and take care of each other. Family is the place where you can find support, love and understanding.
