Oral topic: my future occupation

I don’t believe there is a profession which can be recommended to everyone. I’m looking for a profession where a certain personality is required. The most extreme present-day changes have occurred to the world of work. The very idea of job and profession is not the same it used to be. New technology will challenge into self-employed contractors selling their work. New, multi-trade and high-tech professions are coming to replace the conventional occupations.

I'm a student of Economics at the Kuban State Technological University.

When I graduate from the University I will become a professional economist. What makes a good economist? An economist should have a thorough training in economic theory and the Kuban State Technological University offers such training. At the university we are taught various general and special subjects, such as Macroeconomics, Microeconomics, Management, Accounting, Marketing, Advertising, Money and Banking, Economic Theory, Econometrics, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Philosophy, Business Ethics, Foreign Languages, etc.

This profession is quite diverse. The graduates of our department work at educational institutions, various research centers and laboratories, in different fields of industry, business, but the vast majority prefer working in banks.

They work as managers, namely, as executive managers or financial managers. They also have the right to work as accountants. The accountant is one of the most prestigious and widely required professions in any society.

But you shouldn’t mix an accountant with a so-called book-keeper. While a book-keeper is mostly involved in calculations, like balance sheets, income statements, invoices, accountants are members of the policy group (who are responsible for working out the financial policy of the company).

Some our graduates work at stock exchanges as brokers, others work for the government or are employed by various agencies and even by military services.

As for me, I major in economic security of businesses. This profession has acquired great importance nowadays. Running a successful business is impossible without proper security policy and scientific analysis which assesses risks, financial soundness, opportunities and threats, strengths and weaknesses.

Knowing the economic laws, economists can solve many problems facing our country and I hope I'll manage to contribute to it.
