3.1. Read the text

London is the capital of Great Britain. It is one of the largest cities of the world and the largest city in Europe. The city is very old. It is more than 2 thousand years old. Traditionally it has several parts. They are very different from each other.

The City is the oldest part of London. There are a lot of banks, offices and firms there. Few people live in the City but over a million people work here. You can see two famous sights here: St. Paul’s Cathedral and the Tower of London. St. Paul’s Cathedral was built in the 17^th century by Christopher Wren. The Tower of London was built in the 11^th century. It was a fortress, a palace and a prison. Now it is a museum.

In the Westminster you can see Buckingham Palace where the Queen lives and the House of Parliament stretching very long along the River Thames. Big Ben is the famous clock on the tower of the Houses of Parliament. Westminster Abbey is the place where English princes and princesses became kings and queens.

The West End is the richest and most beautiful part of London. You can see the best hotels, restaurants, shops, clubs, parks and houses here.

Trafalgar Square is the geographical centre of London. The tall Nelson Column stands in the middle of the square. Opposite the Nelson monument is the National Gallery where you can see the finest collection of pictures in the world.

1. Read the text

More than 56 million people live in Britain. Many of them live in big industrial cities like London. Manchester and Liverpool are the biggest industrial cities in the centre of England. Manchester has more than 50 parks. The largest of them is Heaton Park. There are a lot of libraries and schools there.

Such cities as Plymouth, Portsmouth and Liverpool are big ports, where many sailors and fisherman live. Bristol is not a very large port. It is smaller than others, but it’s very beautiful because it’s a royal port. Bristol has two parts. One of them is a port with narrow streets, old churches and old wooden theatre. The second part is modern and it has many fine houses built of stone and many wonderful monuments and churches.

Birmingham is the second largest city in Britain. About 1 million people live in it. There is one of the finest concert halls of Europe here.

Stratford-upon-Avon is a very interesting town. Famous Shakespeare was born here. Here is a church where he is buried.

Cambridge and Oxford are not very big cities. But they are famous for their Universities. Students from the whole Europe want to study there.
