I. General Information. Rules for Application.

Third International Stanislav Neuhaus Piano Competition will be held in Chelyabinsk from 5 to 12 November 2015

The Competition is organized by: Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation, Ministry of Culture of the Chelyabinsk Region, the Chelyabinsk State Academy of Culture and Arts.

1.1. The Competition is held in two nominations:

“Piano solo”

“Piano duo”

1.2. The “Piano solo” nomination of the competition is open to pianists of two age categories:

Category A: pianists up to 18 years of age (at the moment of holding the Competition, i.e. born after November 5, 1996)

Category B: pianists not older than 36 years of age (at the moment of holding the Competition, i.e. born after November 5, 1978.)

1.3. The “Piano duo” nomination of the competition is held for pianists not younger than 15 years of age and not older than 36 years of age, i.e. born after November 5, 1978 but not later than November 5, 2000.

1.4. The Laureates of the 1st prize of the International Stanislav Neuhaus Piano Competition can’t take part in the competition.

1.5. Participation in the Competition is conditional on a candidate submitting the required documents and sending them by e-mail or mail by June 20, 2015 (date on postmark).

Candidates should send the attached application form, completed legibly in printed letters, in Russian or English to the following mail address:

The Following should be included with the application form:

a) Repertoire List with names of composers, full name of the work, tonality, opus, duration of sounding (Stage I-III);

b) birth certificate or passport (photocopy);

c) documentation of musical studies (photocopies);

d) brief CV (education, teachers’ names, participation in piano competitions, copies of diplomas (if there are some), concert activity, prizes and honorary mentions, programmes from concerts and festivals etc.);

e) recommendations from renowned musicians, CEO of concert company or musical institution;

f) 2 current colour glossy portrait photographs (JPEG 10 x 15, 300 dpi by post or e-mail) (for “Piano duo” nomination photo of both musicians desirable).

1.6. The Entrance Fee for the participants is:

“Piano Solo”

for Category A – 2500 rubles

for Category B – 3500 rubles

Piano Duo” – 5000 rubles

Entrance fee is paid after the arrival by cash. Participants refused from performance wouldn’t be given a refund.

1.7. Participants are admitted to perform in both nominations of the competition provided entrance fee is paid for each nomination mentioned by the participant in application form.

1.8. Candidates will be notified of the performing in the Competition by the Organizing Committee.

1.9. Competitors are obliged to inform the Organizing Committee no later than a week before their arrival (date, time, train\flight No).

 

II. Competition conditions

2.1. The Competition for:

“Piano solo” nomination consists of 2 rounds for Category A and of 3 rounds for Category B

“Piano duo” nomination consists of 1 round

2.2. All stages will be open to the public.

2.3. All Competition program compositions of the “Piano solo” nomination must be played from memory.

Competition program of the “Piano duo” nomination may be played from music.

2.4. The playing order of competitors will be defined according to the drawing and will stand definitively until the end of the Competition.

2.5. Competitors are provided an acoustic rehearsal in the concert hall.

2.6. The laureates are obliged to perform in the gala concert and others planned by the Organizing Committee.

2.7. The Organizing Committee has all the rights to the following: recording; public play-back and performance; broadcasting by wired or wireless sound or vision by terrestrial or satellite stations.

 

III. Financial conditions

3.1. Competitors are responsible for travel, accommodation and food expenses.

3.2. Participants from abroad issue passports and visas. The Organizing Committee sends the official invitation, after receiving it a competitor appeals to the Russian Embassy in the country.

3.3. Attached to participants' notification there will be a list of proposed hotels and the Academy’s student hostel that can be reserved.

IV. Jury

4.1. The Chairman of Jury: Eliso Virsaladze (Russia). The Jury will comprise outstanding Russian and foreign musicians.

4.2. Should a competitor overrun the time limit, or because of the evident result the Jury may stop the performance. The Jury has the right to shorten the concert programme.

4.3. The Jury’s decision is definitive and may not be revised.

 

V. Prizes

5.1. The Organizing Committee of the Third International Stanislav Neuhaus Piano Competition announces the following prizes:

“Piano Solo”

Category A

First prize 60 000 rubles

Second prize 45 000 rubles

Third prize 30 000 rubles

Fourth prize 25 000 rubles

 

Category B

First prize 150 000 rubles

Second prize 100 000 rubles

Third prize 70 000 rubles

Fourth prize 50 000 rubles

 

“Piano Duo”

First prize 40 000 rubles

Second prize 30 000 rubles

Third prize 20 000 rubles

Fourth prize 15 000 rubles

5.2. The laureates are awarded with the following titles:

“Piano Solo”

in Category A “Laureate of the Third International Stanislav Neuhaus Competition for Young Pianists” (“Piano solo” nomination).

The rest participants of Stage II are awarded with the title of “Diplomant of the Third International Stanislav Neuhaus Competition for Young Pianists ” (“Piano solo” nomination).

in Category В “Laureate of the Third International Stanislav Neuhaus Piano Competition” (“Piano solo” nomination).

The rest participants of Stage III are awarded with the title of “Diplomant of the Third International Stanislav Neuhaus Piano Competition” (“Piano solo” nomination).

“Piano duo””Laureate of the Third International Stanislav Neuhaus Piano Competition” (“Piano duo” nomination),

“Diplomant of the Third International Stanislav Neuhaus Piano Competition” (“Piano duo” nomination).

5.3. The Jury has the right to withhold or share awards between competitors.

 

VI. Competition Repertoire

“Piano Solo”

Category A:

Stage I ( not to exceed 20 minutes)

 

1. J.S. Bach. Prelude and fugue from “Well-tempered clavier”.

2. Sonata by J. Haydn, W. Mozart or L. Beethoven (may be performed in parts).

3. One virtuoso etude of the following composers: M. Moszkowski, F. Chopin, F. Liszt, S. Rachmaninov, A. Scriabin.

 

Stage II ( not to exceed 25 minutes)

 

1. F. Chopin: Nocturne.

2. One composition from the following composer-romanticists: F. Schubert, C. Weber, F. Mendelssohn, R. Schumann, F. Chopin, F. Liszt.

3. One composition from the following composers: P. Tchaikovsky, A. Scriabin, S. Rachmaninov, S. Prokofiev, D. Shostakovich, C. Debussy, M. Ravel.

Category B:

Stage I ( not to exceed 25 minutes)

 

1. Polyphonic composition with fugue by J.S. Bach, G. Handel or D. Shostakovich

2. One composition by F. Chopin form the list mentioned below: Ballades, Scherzo, Barcarolle Fis-dur op. 60, Fantasia f-moll op. 49; Polonaise fis-moll op. 44, Polonaise As-dur op. 53, Polonaise-Fantasia op. 61, Andante Spianato and Grand polonaise op. 22.

3. One composition at free choice.

 

Stage II (not to exceed 40 minutes)

 

1. A. Scriabin: Two poems op. 63, or op. 69, or op.71.

2. One composition from the following composer-romanticists:

a. F. Schubert. Sonata, “Wandererfantasie” C-dur op. 15;

b. F. Chopin. Sonata b-moll op. 35, Sonata h-moll op. 58, 24 preludes op. 28;

c. R. Schumann. Sonata fis-moll op. 11, Symphonic Etudes op. 13, “Kreisleriana” op. 16, Fantasia C-dur op. 17;

d. F. Liszt. Sonata h-moll;

e. J. Brahms. Sonata, Variations and fugue on a theme by Handel B-dur, op. 24.

3. Any composition of the composers of XX-XXI centuries.

Stage III (not to exceed 30 minutes)

Recital: free program except compositions performed in the previous stages.

 

“Piano Duo”

The Competition program must meet the following demands:

a) free program with the sounding duration of no more than 20 minutes;

b) the program can consist of original compositions as well as of published versions for two pianos and for piano ensemble in 4, 6, and 8 hands;

c) performance of separate parts of a cycle composition is admissible (as well as any other cycle composition within the time duration limit);

d) performance of piano versions of concertos for piano and orchestra is not admissible as well as piano compositions for four hands may not be performed on two pianos;

e) the compositions of the competition program may be performed from music;

The Jury will appreciate

f) performance of original compositions for piano ensemble;

g) competition programs consisting of classical and romantic compositions.
