My name is Kate. My surname is Pavlova. I’m seventeen. I live in Minsk, in Pushkin Street. I was born on the 15th of September.

I’ve got a family. It is small. We are a family of four. I’ve got a father, a mother and a brother. I haven’t got a sister. My father is an engineer. He works in a plant. He is tall and well-built man with black hair and grey eyes. My mother is a pleasant-looking woman of about forty. She is a teacher. My mother is energetic and talkative. She works at school. My brother is little. He doesn’t go to school. He goes to a kindergarten. He is four.

When my parents are at work my Granny looks after my brother. She cooks us tasty dinner. She is very kind. 1 love her very much.

We have got a cat. It is small and grey. It is very nice. It has big blue eyes, a funny nose, a small mouth and sharp teeth. Its ears are small. It can play hide-and-seek.

We have got a lot of relatives: cousins, aunts and uncles, because my Granny has a son and two daughters, five grandchildren, two nieces and one nephew.. They live in different towns. They come to see us and we usually have a good time together. I'm happy to have such a family.

Text 2 (Pre-Intermediate Level)

Introducing Myself

Let me introduce myself. I’m Svetlana Alexandrova. I was born on the 29th of March 1985 in Minsk under the zodiac sign of Aries. I believe that stars influence our fate and character. They say that Aries is full of energy, a leader, straight talker, ambitious and frank, likes sport, stubborn, hot- tempered, but quick to apologize. Actually, I’m persistent. It is different, I think.

As for my appearance, I’m rather tall and slim. I have never thought I am a beauty. I wish I were more beautiful. I think that I’m even-tempered, rather reserved, calm and modest. But sometimes I can lose my temper and become either angry or sad. I like staying alone and sometimes I retire into my shell. But at the same time I like my friends, I like to laugh and to joke. I have got a sense of humour. It means I understand humour and appreciate it. But unfortunately, I’m not often witty myself. I think, I am able to «keep my head when all about me are losing theirs» and to stand up to difficulties when things are not going my way. Besides, I am sincere and tolerant, friendly and faithful, hard-working and serious.

There are many things in our life which I like and some I dislike. I like when everything is OK. Being happy is one way of being wise. I like to study, because knowledge is useful. I am fond of reading as it gives not only knowledge but also wonderful moments of joy and pleasure. Sometimes I enjoy watching TV or listening to the radio. Especially when I can hear some wonderful pieces of music. I like music. It makes people better. It awakens the best feelings and high emotions. But there is a thing that makes me crazy. I’m fond of horses and equestrian skill. I dislike overcrowded buses. And I hate getting up early. I’m happy I have got more things I like than I dislike.

My Family

I’m Alex Kovalev. I am fifteen. I’d like to tell you about my family.

We are a family of three. I live with my parents. But I’ve got an eider brother. He is married and has a family of his own.

In my opinion, family is an emotional centre of a person’s life, transmitter of culture, the place where children are being raised. The process of upbringing children is difficult. It requires much effort, mutual respect, tolerance. In happy families parents are frankly honest with their children without moralizing, and the children in their turn learn how to get on with other people.

The proverb says, «Men make houses, women make homes». In my view, it means that the man provides for his family, pays attentions to the problems of the members of the family. And the woman creates the homely atmosphere, encourages her husband and children to keep up family traditions and keeps the house. Together they bring up their children in the right way.

It is true to our family, I think. My parents have been married for twenty-six years. My father’s name is Vitaly. He is 45 years old. He is an engineer at a Motor Plant. He is tall and strong both in body and character, but rather stout. He has plump oval face with an aquiline nose. He’s generous and full of joy, but very careless. He can make different things with his own hands. Almost all the bookshelves in our flat were made by my father.

My mother’s name is Irina. She is a medium size woman. She his got a thin oval attractive face and light grey eyes and a snub nose. When she was young she had thick curly ash-blond long hair, now she wears her hair short. My mother is a woman of character, well-bred, tactful and fair. She’s warm hearted and at the same time practical, reserved and full of common sense. She is a housewife, she does all the housework and helps my elder brother to bring his sons. She is really concerned about them. They are the apple of the eye. And the boys feel affection for their Granny. My father and I try to help her about the house.

My brother Igor is about 25. He is married, as I have already said. He has got two sons. My elder nephew is a spitting image of my brother and the junior one takes after his mother, my brother’s wife. The boys are funny and curious.

We have got a lot of relatives, because my mother has got five sisters and a brother. So I’ve got many aunts, uncles and cousins. We are all on friendly terms.

6.1. Read the text Family life. What does Kathy actually tell you about herself?

Family life

Kathy Papas, Sydney, Australia:

’My parents came here from the Greek island of Kalymnos in 1965. I was eight years old, the eldest of four children. We shared a house with three other families from Kalymnos when we arrived in Sydney. We were quite Lucky - both my parents found jobs and after about 20 months here they bought a house. But life wasn’t easy for my parents. Language was a real problem and they never real settled down here. They missed their friends back home, Greek hospitality in general, and the closeness to nature they had on the island. In 1980 they moved back to Greece and my father died five years later.

My husband and I socialize almost entirely with our families – his sister and my brother and their children – and other Greek-Australians. We meet in each other’s homes and sometimes we have a barbecue together. Most Greeks live in the suburbs to the east of Sydney so we don’t have far to travel to see each other.

We also send our three daughters to Greek classes twice a week after regular classes. They were all born here but a lot of Australians still tend to think of them as foreigners. This is perhaps the reason that we Greek-Australians stay together like a big family.’

A special day in my life

Days are usually alike, we go to study, see our friends and have some duties at home. But everybody has some days in his life that will never be forgotten.

The special day I remember was during a holiday and I think that the most special days for young people happen during holidays.

It was a sunny day in July and I was spending time at my Granny’s home in the country. The house was situated close to the lake. A group of young people came to the village. They wanted to put up a tent near the lake. It was prohibited to put up tents in the wood and they came to my grandmother and asked her to allow them to camp on her meadow close to the lake. I was still sleeping when they came but later my Granny said they were three boys and two girls. They were really nice and she let them set up the tents and invited them for breakfast. As they were of my age she thought they would be a good company for me. They were from the same city as I was. And she was right. I liked from the first sight one of the boys named Alex.

So I had not only a good company during the holidays but on that special day I met Alex who is still my boyfriend. That is why it was such a special day for me.

TEXT 1

1. The Tyumen region is located on the West-Siberian Plain. On the western district of it there is Tyumen, the capital of oil and gas region which is as large as France, Italy, Spain and Austria taken together. The name of this town is known all over the world. Tyumen, the first Russian town of Siberia – “the mother of Siberian towns”, “the gate to Siberia” - was an ordinary town of Tobolsk province and only in 1944 it became the centre of the largest in the country Tyumen region.

2. The founders of the town chose a wonderful place for it. Its history goes back to 1586. Tyumen was established as a fortress on the Tura river on the place of Tatar town, called Chingi-Tura. Chingi-Tura was founded in the 14th century and was unyoked by Yermak from Tatar-Mongol in 1581.

3. In the early 17th century the first road was built and in the end of the 18th century Tyumen became a trans-shipping point from the Urals to Siberia. Tyumen was also the first station of Trans-Siberian Railway built in the late 19th century and the place where Siberian shipbuilding originated. At that time Tyumen was a little di rty town with wooden houses.

4. But it was born anew on June 21, 1960, the day when the oil was found near a little forest village Shayom. Further discoveries showed that the northern part of Western Siberia possessed incredible quantities of oil and natural gas. A fine modern town with wide streets, high-rise blocks and lots of greenery has risen on the wastelands and marshes.

6.1. Read about the history of Tyumen and ask each other about the most important events. Start so: Did you know that…? Pay attention to the words after the text:

The first explorers of Siberia were the merchants of Novgorod. The movements of Russians to the east was stopped by the Tatar-Mongolian invasion of Russia. The people of Siberia became dependent on the Mongolian Khans. In the 16th century the Cossack ataman Yermak began his marches to Siberia. He captured Chingi-Tura, the former capital of Tyumen Khanate. But he was wounded in the battle with Kuchum-Khan. Yermak tried to swim across Vagai river but drowned because of heavy armour he had on.

The Tsar Ivan IV was not going to pay attention to Yermak’s victories. Only in 1586, after Yermak’s death, Boris Godunov understood what Siberia meant for Moscow. In the summer of 1586 Moscow voivodes Vasily Sukin and Ivan Myasnoy with a detachment of streletses and Cossacks marched into Siberia. On July 29, 1586 they laid the foundation of Tyumen. It was the first Russian stronghold on the most ancient traderoute which connected Western Europe with the countries of the East. The town was set up on the site of the de stroyed Tatar town Chingi-Tura. The location of the town was chosen properly – on the steep, right-hand bank of the Tura river where the Tyumenka ran into the Tura. Their deep, difficult to pass ravines served as natural fortifications. Only the eastern side of the town had to be fortified with the moat and the rampart.

Later on the town was enclosed with wooden wall about 4.26 meters high with 6 sentry towers and two gates. The construction was carried out in haste that was why many buildings went to ruin quickly, the banks crumbled and the fortress had to be built anew. During the following two decades all other parts typical for the Russian town – a fort, a settlement, a monastery were formed around the fortress. Three churches served for the needs of the population of fort: military men and peasants. The considerable part of the male population were coachmen.

With the increase of the population a settlement appeared outside the eastern wall where merchants and handicraftsmen lived. Across the Tyumenka there was the third part of the town. It was a coachmen settlement. All in all there were a little over 300 houses, 5 churches, 2 monasteries, 37 shops and a prison. By the end of the 17th century the population reached 500 people.

Due to its advantageous geographic location Tyumen developed rather quickly. By the turn of 18th century the fortified settlement and fortresses drew the borders far to the south and east from Tyumen. The number of military men decreased but the town population, trade and handicraft population increased.

Later on for centuries the town served as a place of exile and it was only due to the exiled revolutionaries and a few progressive-minded merchants that the cultural life of the town sprang up. The industrial development of Tyumen began with a construction of the Transsiberian railway that connected the town with the European part of Russia.

The Soviet power was established in 1918. During the years of the Soviet power Tyumen has become a large industrial and cultural center of Western Siberia. Nowadays it is a modern city, the center of the oil- and- gas- bearing region. Sometimes it is called the “oil capital of Siberia”. That is the history of Tyumen in brief.

6.2. Read the text and make the review about main higher educational establishments in town.

The main trends of scientific research in the region are connected with regional problems. They are carried out by the scientists within such major programs as “Oil and Gas of Western Siberia” and “Man in the North”. To ensure that roads are open all the year round and to improve the reliability of machinery and metal constructions at low temperatures – these and other problems are being solved on the laboratories of research institutes and higher educational establishments.

Tyumen is a city of students. There are now about ten higher educational establishments in town. The region’s most important higher educational establishment is Tyumen State University, founded in 1973 on the basis of Western Siberia’s oldest Teacher Training Institute. It has many doctors and candidates on the staff. 11 buildings house 13 faculties and 2 institutes. More that 10.000 students study at the full- and part-time departments. There are 4 centers of training in the university structure – the humanities, physics-mathematics, the natural and economic sciences. The University is constantly improving its laboratories and teaching facilities such as language laboratories and computer classes.

The University under professor Gennady Kutsev, Academician of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, collaborates under various direct agreements with higher educational establishments in Canada, France and Germany. It organizes student exchanges and invites foreign specialists to give lectures.

A special role in the training of specialists is played by the State Oil and Gas University. About 30.000 students are trained at 50 specialties. The university is now the largest in the region having 12 departments, numerous educational centers and 13 branches all over the North. Many of the university’s graduates are now in charge of geological expeditions and oil refineries or work in research department and large oil companies.

The Tyumen Institute of Arts and Culture was opened in 1991 on the basis of the Chelyabinsk Culture Institute.

The monumental building of the University of Architecture and Civil Engineering can be considered as the ”face” of Tyumen. The wonderful “Palace on the hill” is seen from far away. It trains architects, builders, road constructors, economists. Among the Academies of the town Agricultural, Military and Medical ones can be named.

These basic institutions and their branches train specialists in all fields necessary for the region, for its industrial and cultural development, improvement of its environment, public health, public order and education. The staff of the region’s higher educational establishments boast 156 doctors of Science, more than 1000 Candidates of Science and 14 Academicians. Over the last 20 years they have educated more than 1000 000 specialists in 70 professions. A total of 75% of their graduates work in Tyumen. Many occupy leading posts in the management and economic structures in the city, the region and the country.

So the number of specialities is constantly growing at the higher educational establishme nts of Tyumen because different branches of region’s industry demands more highly qualified specialists.
