LEGAMBIENTE

WHO ARE WE?

Legambiente is a non-profit leading environmental organisation in Italy that works for the safeguarding and enhancement of natural resources; environment; common health; animal and plant species; historical, artistic and cultural heritage; territories and landscapes. It is formed by 20 regional committees and around 1000 local groups. Since its foundation in 1980, Legambiente’s hallmark is the scientific environmentalism, which is the willingness to build every environmental protection project on a solid base made of scientific data.

Legambiente’s mission is to make environmental culture at the centre of a new kind of development and diffused well-being. Important values for the association are the improvement of environmental quality, the fight against all forms of pollution, a wise use of natural resources, the construction of a more balanced relationship between human beings and the nature. Spreading those values could be an effective way to respond to the challenges of our time: the modernization of the economy, the commitment to beat unemployment, the struggle for peace and against all forms of discrimination and social injustice, the effort to consider globalization not only as a mere trading of goods but also as a means to improve quality of life and to give rights to billions of men and women forced to live in poverty.

LEGAMBIENTE’S WORKCAMPS

Legambiente has been organising volunteering campaigns since 1991, promoting summer-camps in many protected areas both in Italy and abroad.

Voluntary work camps have three main objectives:

- safeguard and enhance the Italian environmental, historical, cultural and artistic heritage;

- raise the awareness of local communities and foreign volunteers about the value of the natural and cultural heritage andspread sustainable and responsible lifestyles;

- build peace through cultural exchange.

Voluntary projects also help in promoting green tourism, developing sustainable economy, stimulating people to be active citizens and participate in decision-making processes that shape their future as communities.

Work organization. Each work camp can be differently organized according to its specific needs.

Volunteers will be working approximately 30 hours/week. Sometimes they may be asked for working over the weekend or early in the morning in case of high temperature.

Volunteers are expected to be open-minded, flexible, and adaptable to different situations. Moreover, they need to be inclined to face either lacks or unexpected events with a positive attitude.

Not elsewhere specified, special skills are not required. Nevertheless, participation, enthusiasm and motivation are welcome!

Usually volunteers sleep in mixed rooms. Single or double rooms are not available. Shifts for cooking and cleaning are scheduled during the first day.

Each volunteer is responsible for all aspects of the daily life on the work camp.

Food. In the most part of our workcamps food will be almost vegetarian and based on local products. Volunteers will eat meat a very few times.

Language: English is the official language of the work camp. Nonetheless, in some workcamps implemented in remote villages, local communities can only speak Italian.

Each workcamp will host a maximum of 2 volunteers for each country, in order to create a heterogeneous group and to foster a real cultural exchange.

Participation fee: adult workcamps don’t foresee any additional fee. In teenage and family workcamps a participation fee is required and is to be brought in cash directly to the camp; the whole amount is addressed to the local group organising the camp and will be totally used to cover part of the expenses of the camp itself.

Insurance: volunteers are insured for permanent damages caused by accidents and third person liability. For non-European volunteers, it is recommended to be provided with a health insurance.

Placement: Legambiente staff will start placement on 14th March.

Description

Project: The project has been conceived by five no-profit associations who ordinarily work for the valorization of the VII Municipality of Rome and the revitalisation of its local community.

The aim of the workcamp is to valorise some green areas scattered in the district, areas that normally are managed by different active citizenship realities and that face the current critical problems of a big city. The volunteers will focus their efforts in 4 green areas through ordinary maintenance and self-construction workshops for do-it-yourself furniture.

Local organisers:

The Comitato Parco Giovannipoli was established in 2013 following the failure to care of the Park of the Catacombs of Commodilla, with the objective to keep it alive and usable for citizenship.

Since its inception, the Comitato Parco Giovannipoli has been playing an important work of maintenance, bringing an almost complete restoration of the Park; the work has been also recognized by the City of Rome with the award of custody of the Park from July 15, 2014.

The most important result of its actions has been the creation of Garbatella Park which, through a 20-year engagement, has been involving citizens, associations, local administrators and obtained the official custody of the area by the Assessorship to Environment.

Nessun Dorma has been organizing since 2010 cultural and aggregating activities in a dormitory suburb area, and it is particularly committed in recovering abandoned green areas to make them culture and sociality cores.

La Strada is a social centre focusing on antiracism. Since ’90 it has been collaborating with the local institutions in order to foster bottom-up decisional processes; this experience led to the creation of the public agency Rights and New Citizenship, with an help-desk for the citizens’ rights and networks’ development. From 2000 on, it starts working on migration, street education and information with many projects.

Villetta Social Lab is a social space where youth, families and elder people find a place to express and to practice social innovation.

Work: in the first phase of the camp the volunteers will create urban furniture through self-construction workshops, in particular for collected waste areas, informative panels, benches and tables, gazebos, compost structures; in the second phase the volunteers will install the furniture and dedicate to the cleaning of the green areas, mainly waste and grass removal.

Description

Project: The village is quite small and mainly with older inhabitants. The request to organize a workcamp came directly from the population more than 4 years ago, because they want to see the village taking more life during summer while preserving the cultural and natural heritage.

Legambiente local group: Legambiente Prato was founded in 1986; since then it has been engaged in the defence of environmental heritage, promotion and education on environmental issues throughout young students and the whole citizenship. Focusing on renewable energies, sustainable development, waste management, biodiversity, promotion of healthy life styles, Legambiente Prato has set up since its beginning several projects which still produce outstanding outcomes. Listed below some of the most successful activities of the organization: management of “Rifugio Le Cave” environmental education center (CEA) inside a natural reserve; summer international workcamps in the Province of Prato; permanent environmental education in Prato's schools on the topics of water, energy, biodiversity, climate change; national campaigns “Puliamo Il mondo”, “Festa dell'albero”; local festivals; European Volunteering Service projects.

Work: The working activities will mainly consists in recovering some parts of naturalistic pathways starting from Poggio alla Malva or other location displaced in the Municipalities of Carmignano from infestant herbs, trash and so on. Where necessary volunteers will also put new signals of pathways. The pathways they are going to clean have a historical-social value connected to the past (Etruscan heritage, II world war heritage and so on).

Study part: How to read a mountain pathway map; how to behave in a hiking - thanks to collaboration with local CAI department (Italian Alpine Club); sustainable tourism through art (photo-reportage of the faces and places of local community and realization of a short video or document/pictures to promote along ecotouristic blog/website or to be promoted inside “La nuova ecologia” magazine). Other activities dealing with reflection on environmental topics are foreseen.

Accommodation and food: The accommodation of the workcamp consists in a local school displaced in the territory of the Municipality of Carmignano (Poggio alla Malva or nearby villages)

In the school there will be beds in one or more rooms, bathroom and kitchen place. There will be also 2 outside covered showers.

Location and leisure: Carmignano (http://www.comune.carmignano.po.it/) counts 14.000 inhabitants. This Municipality covers an area where historic, landscape and wine-gastronomic heritage are well represented. Thanks to its position between Prato and Florence, this lovely place is especially wonderful for its views and green countryside. Poggio alla Malva, one of the many villages that is under the Carmignano Municipality, is also very close to the UNESCO site “Artimino's Villa” a renaissance structure world-wide famous for its hundred chimney tops. Poggio alla Malva also testifies an important site where Etruscan signs are still visible (necropolis, old structures and landmarks).
