9.The role of Oxford in Cambridge foundation. After disputes between students and Oxford townsfolk in 1209, some academics fled north-east to Cambridge, where they established what became the University of Cambridge. The two ancient English universities have many common features and are often jointly referred to as Oxbridge. In addition to their cultural and practical associations, as a historic part of British society, they have a long history of rivalry with each other.

The Oxford coat of arms has the Latin expression which is translated as “Господь – мой свет”.

9. Harvard is situated in Massachusetts – the place where the first colonists arrived, landing from the Mayflower in 1620. Their settlement was named after the town of Plymouth in England, from where the colonists set up on three-month long voyage.

9. What is the legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table about?

According to the legend Arthur, the son of king Uther Pendragon, was kidnapped by the wizard Merlin. Merlin asked sir Ector who was a good knight to bring up the boy. Some years later Merlin invited all knights to London and showed them an Excalibur in a stone, where was a transcription: “The one who will draw the sword from the anvil will become the king”. Many knights tried to draw the sword but only Arthur done it, although he was only a boy. Then he became the most famous king of history.

How is the Mardi Gras celebration tradition in Louisiana connected with Russia? The parade tradition began in 1872 when Russia’s Grand Duke Alexis Romanoff visited Mardi Gras and New Orleans. City leaders saw this as a wonderful opportunity to shift citizen’s focus away from the destruction and devastation that surrounded them following the Civil War. Thus, the Rex Krewe determined that they would honor the Grand Duke by arranging a daytime parade around his arrival and the tradition was born that still lives on today.
