And trees and hills they long have known.

Gandalf looked at him. “My dear Bilbo!” he said. “Something is the matter with you! You are not the hobbit that you were.”

And so they crossed the bridge (и так = и вот они пересекли мост) and passed the mill by the river (и прошли мимо мельницы у реки) and came right back to Bilbo’s own door (и вернулись прямо к собственной двери Бильбо).

“Bless me (Бог мой: «благослави меня»)! What’s going on (что же это происходит)?” he cried (закричал он). There was a great commotion (а было /там/ великое беспокойство), and people of all sorts (и самые разные люди: «и люди всех видов»; sort — вид, род, сорт), respectable and unrespectable (уважаемые и неуважаемые), were thick round the door (стояли в большом количестве у двери; thick — толстый; густой, частый; многочисленный, многолюдный), and many were going in and out (и многие входили и выходили; in and out — взад и вперед; то внутрь, то наружу) — not even wiping their feet on the mat (даже не вытирая ноги о коврик; to wipe — вытирать, обтирать), as Bilbo noticed with annoyance (как Бильбо заметил с раздражением). If he was surprised (если он и был удивлен), they were more surprised still (то они были все же удивлены еще больше). He had arrived back (он возвратился; to arrive — прибывать, приезжать) in the middle of an auction (в самой середине = в разгаре аукциона)! There was a large notice in black and red (большое объявление /написанное/ черным по красному; сравн.: in black and white — в письменной форме, черным по белому) hung on the gate (висело на воротах/калитке; to hang (hung, hanged) — вешать, подвешивать; висеть), stating that on June the Twenty-second (гласившее, что двадцать второго июня; to state — излагать, формулировать, констатировать) Messrs. Grubb, Grubb, and Burrowes (господа Грабб, Грабб и Бэрроуз) would sell by auction (будут продавать с аукциона) the effects of the late Bilbo Baggins Esquire, of Bag-End, Underhill, Hobbiton (имущество покойного Бильбо Бэггинса, эсквайра, из Бэг-Энда, под Холмом, что в Хоббитоне; late — опоздавший; поздний; покойный). Sale to commence at ten o’clock sharp (распродажа начнется в десять часов ровно). It was now nearly lunch-time (сейчас уже было почти что время ленча; lunch — второй завтрак в середине дня, между 12 и 14 часами), and most of the things had already been sold (и большинство из вещей уже были проданы; to sell (sold) — продать, торговать, продаваться), for various prices (за самые различные цены) from next to nothing to old songs (почти задаром и за бесценок; for a song — очень дешево, за бесценок; song — песня, пение) (as is not unusual at auctions (что является обычным: «не является необычным» для аукционов)). Bilbo’s cousins the Sackville-Bagginses (двоюродные братья Бильбо, Саквиль-Бэггинсы) were, in fact, busy (на самом деле, были заняты тем) measuring his rooms (что измеряли его комнаты; to measure — измерять, мерить, снимать мерку) to see if their own furniture would fit (чтобы понять, подойдет ли /в них/ их собственная мебель; to fit — соответствовать, годиться, подходить, быть впору). In short Bilbo was “Presumed Dead” (говоря коротко, Бильбо был "Предполагаемым Погибшим"; to presume — полагать, предполагать, presumed — предполагаемый) and not everybody that said so (и не все, кто говорил так) was sorry to find the presumption wrong (огорчились, обнаружив, что это предположение было неверным; presumption — предположение, допущение).

And so they crossed the bridge and passed the mill by the river and came right back to Bilbo’s own door. “Bless me! What’s going on?” he cried. There was a great commotion, and people of all sorts, respectable and unrespectable, were thick round the door, and many were going in and out — not even wiping their feet on the mat, as Bilbo noticed with annoyance. Bilbo’s cousins the Sackville-Bagginses were, in fact, busy measuring his rooms to see if their own furniture would fit. In short Bilbo was “Presumed Dead,” and not everybody that said so was sorry to find the presumption wrong.

The return of Mr. Bilbo Baggins (возвращение мистера Бильбо Бэггинса) created quite a disturbance (создало немалый переполох; disturbance — нарушение равновесия, волнения), both under the Hill and over the Hill (как под Холмом, так и за Холмом), and across the Water (и по ту сторону Воды); it was a great deal more (это было нечто гораздо большее) than a nine days’ wonder (чем кратковременная сенсация: «чудо на девять дней»; nine days’ wonder — злоба дня; wonder — чудо; изумление). The legal bother, indeed, lasted for years (юридические хлопоты, на самом-то деле, длились еще многие годы; bother — беспокойство, хлопоты). It was quite a long time (довольно много времени прошло) before Mr. Baggins was in fact admitted to be alive again (прежде чем мистер Бэггинса, на самом деле, признали: «мистер Бэггинс был признан» вновь живым; to admit — признавать, допускать).

The people who had got specially good bargains at the Sale (тех людей, что заключили особенно удачные сделки на Распродаже; bargain — торговая сделка, договор о покупке, выгодная покупка, что-либо купленное по дешевке) took a deal of convincing (пришлось долго убеждать; to convince — убеждать, уверять); and in the end (и наконец) to save time (чтобы сэкономить время) Bilbo had to buy back (Бильбо пришлось выкупить /назад/) quite a lot of his own furniture (достаточно большое количество своей собственной мебели). Many of his silver spoons mysteriously disappeared (множество его серебряных ложечек таинственным образом исчезло) and were never accounted for (и никогда так /никто/ и не объяснил /куда они подевались/; to account for — дать объяснения по какому-либо поводу, представить счет). Personally he suspected the Sackville-Bagginses (лично сам Бильбо подозревал Саквиль-Бэггинсов). On their side (со своей стороны) they never admitted (они так никогда и не признали) that the returned Baggins was genuine (что вернувшийся Бэггинс был настоящим; genuine — подлинный, истинный, настоящий), and they were not on friendly terms with Bilbo ever after (и они больше не поддерживали с ним дружеских отношений; to be on friendly terms with smb. — дружить с кем-либо, быть в хороших отношениях; ever after — с тех пор /и до конца/). They really had wanted (им действительно так хотелось) to live in his nice hobbit-hole (жить в его прекрасной хоббитовской норке) so very much (так очень сильно /хотелось/).

disturbance [dIs'tq:b(q)ns] mysteriously [mI'stI(q)rIqslI] genuine ['dZenjVIn]

The return of Mr. Bilbo Baggins created quite a disturbance, both under the Hill and over the Hill, and across the Water; it was a great deal more than a nine days’ wonder. The legal bother, indeed, lasted for years. It was quite a long time before Mr. Baggins was in fact admitted to be alive again.

The people who had got specially good bargains at the Sale took a deal of convincing; and in the end to save time Bilbo had to buy back quite a lot of his own furniture. Many of his silver spoons mysteriously disappeared and were never accounted for. Personally he suspected the Sackville-Bagginses. On their side they never admitted that the returned Baggins was genuine, and they were not on friendly terms with Bilbo ever after. They really had wanted to live in his nice hobbit-hole so very much.

Indeed Bilbo found he had lost more than spoons (в действительности же Бильбо обнаружил, неожиданно для себя, что он потерял больше, чем ложечки) — he had lost his reputation (он потерял свою репутацию). It is true that for ever after (правда, что с тех самых пор) he remained an elf-friend (он оставался другом эльфов), and had the honour of dwarves, wizards (и ему оказывали честь /посещением/ гномы и волшебники), and all such folk as ever passed that way (и все подобные люди, что проходили той дорогой); but he was no longer quite respectable (но он больше не был вполне почтенным). He was in fact held (его, на самом деле, считали; to hold (held) — держать, удерживать; полагать, считать) by all the hobbits of the neighbourhood (все хоббиты в ближайшей округе; neighbour — сосед, соседка; neighbourhood — соседство, близость, округа) to be ‘queer’ ("чудаковатым") — except by his nephews and nieces on the Took side (за исключением его племянников и племянниц по Туковской линии), but even they were not encouraged in their friendship (но даже и их не поощряли в их дружбе; to encourage — ободрять, вселять мужество, поощрять, поддерживать) by their elders (их старшие /родственники/).

I am sorry to say he did not mind (к сожалению, должен сказать, что его это не волновало; to mind — заботиться, волноваться, беспокоиться, тревожиться). He was quite content (он был вполне доволен); and the sound of the kettle on his hearth (и шум от его чайника над его очагом) was ever after more musical (был еще более музыкальным с тех пор) than it had been even in the quiet days (чем он даже был в те спокойные деньки) before the Unexpected Party (до Неожиданных Гостей). His sword he hung over the mantelpiece (свой меч он повесил над каминной полкой; to hang (hung, hanged)). His coat of mail was arranged on a stand in the hall (свою кольчугу он пристроил на стойке в прихожей; to arrange — приводить в порядок; приспосабливать) (until he lent it to a Museum (пока он не отдал ее в Музей; to lend (lent) — давать взаймы, на время)). His gold and silver was largely spent in presents (его золото и серебро, по большей части, было потрачено на подарки; to spend (spent) — тратить, растрачивать, расходовать), both useful and extravagant (как полезные, так и экстравагантные) — which to a certain extent (что в некоторой степени; certain — определенный, некоторый, известный) accounts for the affection of his nephews and his nieces (объясняет привязанность его племянников и племянниц; affection — привязанность, любовь, расположение). His magic ring he kept a great secret (свое волшебное кольцо он хранил в большом секрете; to keep (kept)), for he chiefly used it (так как он главным образом пользовался им) when unpleasant callers came (когда приходили неприятные посетители; caller — посетитель, гость, визитер). He took to writing poetry (он пристрастился писать стихи; to take (took, taken) to smth. — пристраститься к чему-либо, проявлять интерес, симпатию к чему-либо, начинать заниматься чем-либо) and visiting the elves (и посещать эльфов); and though many shook their heads (и, хотя многие и качали головами; to shake (shook, shaken)) and touched their foreheads (и вертели пальцем у виска: «прикасались ко лбу») and said “Poor old Baggins!” (и говорили: "Бедный старина Бэггинс!") and though few believed any of his tales (и хотя не многие верили во все его истории: «любой из его историй»), he remained very happy to the end of his days (он оставался очень счастливым до конца своих дней), and those were extraordinarily long (а они оказались чрезвычайно долгими).

reputation ["repjV'teIS(q)n] honour ['Onq] neighbourhood ['neIbqhVd] queer [kwIq] nephew ['nef|ju:, 'nev-] encourage [In'kArIdZ] extravagant [Ik'strxvqgqnt]

Indeed Bilbo found he had lost more than spoons — he had lost his reputation. It is true that for ever after he remained an elf-friend, and had the honour of dwarves, wizards, and all such folk as ever passed that way; but he was no longer quite respectable. He was in fact held by all the hobbits of the neighbourhood to be ‘queer’ — except by his nephews and nieces on the Took side, but even they were not encouraged in their friendship by their elders. I am sorry to say he did not mind. He was quite content; and the sound of the kettle on his hearth was ever after more musical than it had been even in the quiet days before the Unexpected Party. His sword he hung over the mantelpiece. His coat of mail was arranged on a stand in the hall (until he lent it to a Museum). His gold and silver was largely spent in presents, both useful and extravagant — which to a certain extent accounts for the affection of his nephews and his nieces. His magic ring he kept a great secret, for he chiefly used it when unpleasant callers came. He took to writing poetry and visiting the elves; and though many shook their heads and touched their foreheads and said “Poor old Baggins!” and though few believed any of his tales, he remained very happy to the end of his days, and those were extraordinarily long.

One autumn evening some years afterwards (одним осенним вечером, несколько лет спустя) Bilbo was sitting in his study (Бильбо сидел в своем кабинете; study — изучение; рабочий кабинет /в квартире ученого, писателя/) writing his memoirs (пиша свои мемуары) — he thought of calling them (он подумывал назвать их) “There and Back Again, a Hobbit’s Holiday” ("Туда и снова обратно, или каникулы Хоббита") — when there was a ring at the door (когда у двери раздался звонок). It was Gandalf and a dwarf (это были Гэндальф и гном); and the dwarf was actually Balin (а гном был, на самом-то деле, Балин).

“Come in (входите)! Come in!” said Bilbo, and soon they were settled in chairs by the fire (и вскоре все они устроились: «были усажены» в креслах у огня; to settle — устраивать(ся), усаживать(ся)). If Balin noticed that Mr. Baggins’ waistcoat was more extensive (если Балин заметил, что жилет мистера Бэггинса стал: «был» более просторный; extensive — обширный, просторный) (and had real gold buttons (и у него были настоящие золотые пуговицы)), Bilbo also noticed (то и Бильбо тоже заметил) that Balin’s beard was several inches longer (что борода у Балина была на несколько дюймов длиннее), and his jewelled belt (и что его пояс, украшенный драгоценными каменьями; jewel — драгоценный камень, ювелирная вещь; to jewel — украшать драгоценными камнями) was of great magnificence (был необычайно великолепен; magnificence — великолепие, пышность).

They fell to talking of their times together (они принялись говорить о тех временах, проведенных вместе; to fall to (doing) smth. — браться, начинать делать что-либо), of course (конечно же), and Bilbo asked how things were going (и Бильбо спросил, как идут дела) in the lands of the Mountain (в землях у Горы). It seemed they were going very well (оказалось, что дела шли очень хорошо). Bard had rebuilt the town in Dale (Бард отстроил заново город Дейл) and men had gathered to him (и люди собрались к нему) from the Lake and from South and West (и с Озера, и с Юга, и Запада), and all the valley had become tilled again and rich (и вся долина снова стала возделанной и богатой; to till — возделывать, обрабатывать, пахать землю), and the desolation was now filled (и /земли/ запустения теперь были заполнены) with birds and blossoms in spring (птицами и цветами весной) and fruit and feasting in autumn (плодами и празднествами осенью). And Lake-town was refounded (да и Город-на-Озере был заново восстановлен; to refound — заново основывать, восстанавливать) and was more prosperous than ever (и процветал больше: «и был более процветающим» чем когда-либо; prosperous — процветающий, преуспевающий), and much wealth went up and down the Running River (и многие богатства перевозились вверх и вниз по Быстротечной Реке; wealth — богатство, обилие; собир. материальные ценности, богатства); and there was friendship in those parts (и в тех краях царила: «была» дружба) between elves and dwarves and men (между эльфами, гномами и людьми).

The old Master had come to a bad end (старый Глава Города плохо кончил). Bard had given him much gold for the help of the Lake-people (Бард отдал ему много золота, чтобы помочь людям-с-Озера), but being of the kind that easily catches such disease (но так как он был из людей такого сорта, что легко подхватывают подобные болезни) he fell under the dragon-sickness (то он заболел драконьей болезнью; to fall under smth. — подвергаться чему-либо, испытать что-либо), and took most of the gold (и забрал большую часть золота) and fled with it (и сбежал с ним), and died of starvation in the Waste (и умер от голода в Пустыне), deserted by his companions (покинутый своими товарищами).

memoir ['memwQ:] extensive [Ik'stensIv] refound [ri:'faVnd] disease [dI'zi:z]

One autumn evening some years afterwards Bilbo was sitting in his study writing his memoirs — he thought of calling them “There and Back Again, a Hobbit’s Holiday” — when there was a ring at the door. It was Gandalf and a dwarf; and the dwarf was actually Balin.

“Come in! Come in!” said Bilbo, and soon they were settled in chairs by the fire. If Balin noticed that Mr. Baggins’ waistcoat was more extensive (and had real gold buttons), Bilbo also noticed that Balin’s beard was several inches longer, and his jewelled belt was of great magnificence. They fell to talking of their times together, of course, and Bilbo asked how things were going in the lands of the Mountain. It seemed they were going very well. Bard had rebuilt the town in Dale and men had gathered to him from the Lake and from South and West, and all the valley had become tilled again and rich, and the desolation was now filled with birds and blossoms in spring and fruit and feasting in autumn. And Lake-town was refounded and was more prosperous than ever, and much wealth went up and down the Running River; and there was friendship in those parts between elves and dwarves and men. The old Master had come to a bad end. Bard had given him much gold for the help of the Lake-people, but being of the kind that easily catches such disease he fell under the dragon-sickness, and took most of the gold and fled with it, and died of starvation in the Waste, deserted by his companions.

“The new Master is of wiser kind (новый Глава более мудрый; wise — мудрый, умный, разумный),” said Balin, “and very popular (и очень популярен), for, of course, he gets most of the credit (так как, конечно же, он ставит себе в заслугу; to get credit for smth — приписывать себе честь чего-либо, ставить себе в заслугу что-либо; credit — вера, репутация, честь, заслуга) for the present prosperity (нынешнее процветание). They are making songs (они слагают песни) which say that in his day the rivers run with gold (в которых говорится, что в его дни реки текут золотом).”

“Then the prophecies of the old songs (тогда пророчества старых песен; prophecy — предсказание, пророчество, прорицание) have turned out to be true (оказались правдой: «подтвердились»; to turn out — закончиться с определенным результатом, стать, сделаться, оказаться), after a fashion (некоторым образом; fashion — образ, манера, вид, фасон, мода)!” said Bilbo.

“Of course (конечно)!” said Gandalf. “And why should not they prove true (а почему бы им и не сбыться; to prove true — подтвердиться)? Surely you don’t disbelieve the prophecies (конечно же, вы же не /можете/ не верить пророчествам), because you had a hand in bringing them about yourself (оттого, что сами приложили руку к тому, чтобы они подтвердились; to have a hand in smth. — участвовать в чем-либо)? You don’t really suppose (не полагаете же вы и в самом деле), do you (не так ли), that all your adventures and escapes (что все ваши приключения и /удачные/ побеги) were managed by mere luck (удавались просто по удаче; to manage — справляться, суметь сделать), just for your sole benefit (исключительно ради вас; for the benefit of smb. — на благо, пользу кого-либо)? You are a very fine person, Mr. Baggins (вы очень хороший человек, мистер Бэггинс), and I am very fond of you (и я вас очень люблю); but you are only quite a little fellow (но вы всего лишь маленький человечек) in a wide world after all (в огромном мире, несмотря ни на что; after all — после, несмотря на, в конце концов, все же)!”

“Thank goodness (и слава Богу; goodness — доброта, великодушие, ценные качества)!” said Bilbo laughing (сказал Бильбо, смеясь), and handed him the tobacco-jar (и протянул ему табакерку; to hand — передавать, вручать; jar — банка, кувшин, сосуд).

“The new Master is of wiser kind,” said Balin, “and very popular, for, of course, he gets most of the credit for the present prosperity. “Of course!” said Gandalf. “And why should not they prove true? Surely you don’t disbelieve the prophecies, because you had a hand in bringing them about yourself? “Thank goodness!” said Bilbo laughing, and handed him the tobacco-jar.
