ЗНАЕТЕ ЛИ ВЫ?

And before he left he told each of us anxiously,

"I'll write regularly, once a month. We must keep together for the sake of the old times." He had three prints taken from the negative of that photo on the haystack, wrote on the back of them, "George took this the day that Needle found the needle" and gave us a copy each. I think we all wished he could become a bit more callous.

During my lifetime I was a drifter (в течение моей жизни я была бродягой; life (жизнь) + time (время); to drift — медленно передвигаться, плыть по течению), nothing organized (никакой стабильности: «ничего организованного»). It was difficult for my friends (друзьям было сложно: «это было трудно для моих друзей») to follow the logic of my life (следовать логике моей жизни). By the normal reckonings (с обычной точки зрения: «при обычном расчете») I should have come to starvation and ruin (я должна была прийти к голоданию и разорению), which I never did (чего я никогда не сделала = не пришла к этому). Of course (конечно), I did not live to write about life as I wanted to do (я не смогла заниматься описанием жизни, как я того хотела: «не сделала жить чтобы писать о жизни»). Possibly that is why (возможно вот почему) I am inspired to do so now (у меня есть вдохновение: «я вдохновлена» делать это /описывать жизнь/ сейчас) in these peculiar circumstances (при этих странных обстоятельствах).

I taught in a private school in Kensington (я преподавала в частной школе в Кенсингтоне; to teach (taught, taught), Kensington — район в Лондоне) for almost three months (почти три месяца), very small children (очень маленьких детей). I didn't know what to do with them (я не знала, что делать с ними) but I was kept fairly busy (но я была полностью занята; to keep smb busy — занимать кого-либо) escorting incontinent little boys to the lavatory (сопровождая маленьких мальчиков, страдающих недержанием, в туалет) and telling the little girls to use their handkerchiefs (и говоря маленьким девочкам пользоваться своими носовыми платками). After that I lived a winter holiday in London on my small capital (после того, как я провела: «прожила» зимние каникулы в Лондоне, на свой небольшой: «маленький» капитал) and when that had run out (и когда он кончился; to run — бежать, to run out — выбегать, кончаться) I found a diamond bracelet in the cinema (я нашла бриллиантовый браслет в кинотеатре) for which I received a reward of fifty pounds (за который я получила вознаграждение в пятьдесят фунтов; pound — зд. фунт стерлингов).

When it was used up (когда они были израсходованы) I got a job with a publicity man (я нашла работу у пресс-агента; publicity — рекламирование), writing speeches for absorbed industrialists (пишущего речи для занятых: «поглощенных» промышленников), in which (в которой) the dictionary of quotations (словарь цитат) came in very useful (очень пригодился: «вошел очень полезно»). So it went on (так оно и продолжалось; to go on). I got engaged to Skinny (я обручилась со Скинни), but shortly after that (но вскоре после этого) I was left a small legacy (мне досталось небольшое наследство), enough to keep me for six months (достаточное, чтобы поддержать меня в течение шести месяцев). This somehow decided me (это каким-то образом подсказало мне: «это как-то решило мне») that I didn't love Skinny (что я не люблю Скинни) so I gave him back the ring (так что я отдала ему кольцо /назад/).

When it was used up I got a job with a publicity man, writing speeches for absorbed industrialists, in which the dictionary of quotations came in very useful. So it went on. I got engaged to Skinny, but shortly after that I was left a small legacy, enough to keep me for six months. This somehow decided me that I didn't love Skinny so I gave him back the ring.

But it was through Skinny (но именно Скинни помог мне: «но это было через Скинни») that I went to Africa (что я отправилась в Африку). He was engaged with a party of researchers (он был приглашен /на работу/ с группой исследователей) to investigate King Solomon's mines (исследовать Копи царя Соломона; mine — шахта), that series of ancient workings (тот ряд древних выработок) ranging (простирающихся) from the ancient port of Ophir (от древнего порта Офир), now called Beira (теперь называемого Бейра), across Portuguese East Africa (через португальскую восточную Африку; east — восток) and Southern Rhodesia (и Южную Родезию) to the mighty jungle-city of Zimbabwe (до огромного города в джунглях — Зимбабве; jungle (джунгли) + city (город); whose temple walls (стены храма которого) still stand by (все еще стоят на) the approach (подходе) to an ancient (к древней) and sacred mountain (и священной горе), where the rubble (где обломки: «валуны») of that civilization (той цивилизации) scatters itself (распространяются: «разбрасывают себя») over the surrounding (по всей: «поверх окружающей /его/») Rhodesian waste (родезианской пустыне).

I accompanied the party (я сопровождала группу) as a sort of secretary (как нечто вроде секретаря). Skinny vouched for me (Скинни поручился за меня), he paid my fare (он оплатил мой проезд; fare — плата за проезд), he sympathized by his action with my inconsequential life (он сочувствовал мне и помогал действиями, хотя считал мою жизнь непоследовательной: «он действиями сочувствовал с моей непоследовательной жизнью») although (хотя) when he spoke of it (когда он говорил об этом) he disapproved (высказывал неодобрение: «он не одобрял»).
