Down sat Dingo — Poor Dog Dingo — always hungry, dusty in the sunshine; hung out his tongue and howled.

Down sat Kangaroo (сел Кенгуру) — Old Man Kangaroo (Старина Кенгуру) — stuck out his tail like a milking-stool behind him (выставил сзади свой хвост, как табурет молочницы; behind him — за ним = за собой), and said (и сказал), ‘Thank goodness that’s finished (слава Богу, это закончилось)!’

Then said Nqong, who is always a gentleman (тогда Нквонг, который всегда есть = был хорошо воспитанным и порядочным человеком, сказал), ‘Why aren’t you grateful to Yellow-Dog Dingo (почему ты не благодарен Желтой-Собаке Динго)? Why don’t you thank him for all he has done for you

Down sat Kangaroo — Old Man Kangaroo — stuck out his tail like a milking-stool behind him, and said, ‘Thank goodness that’s finished!’

Then said Nqong, who is always a gentleman, ‘Why aren’t you grateful to Yellow-Dog Dingo? Why don’t you thank him for all he has done for you?’

Then said Kangaroo (тогда сказал Кенгуру) — Tired Old Kangaroo (Уставший Старый Кенгуру) — ‘He’s chased me out of the homes of my childhood (она[78] выгнала меня из родных мест моего детства); he’s chased me out of my regular meal-times (она выгнала меня из моих регулярных приемов пищи = выбила меня из графика регулярного питания); he’s altered my shape so I’ll never get it back (она так изменила мою форму, что я никогда не верну ее обратно); and he’s played Old Scratch with my legs (и она сыграла скверную шутку с моими ногами; to play Old Harry / Old Scratch / old gooseberry — разрушить, исковеркать, наделать беды).’

Then said Nqong (тогда Нквонг сказал), ‘Perhaps I’m mistaken (возможно, я ошибаюсь), but didn’t you ask me to make you different from all other animals (но разве ты не просил меня сделать тебя отличным от всех других животных), as well as to make you very truly sought after (а также очень популярным, чтобы за тобой бегали; sought after — популярный, пользующийся спросом; to seek — искать, разыскивать; разузнавать)? And now it is five o’clock

Then said Kangaroo — Tired Old Kangaroo — ‘He’s chased me out of the homes of my childhood; he’s chased me out of my regular meal-times; he’s altered my shape so I’ll never get it back; and he’s played Old Scratch with my legs.’

Then said Nqong, ‘Perhaps I’m mistaken, but didn’t you ask me to make you different from all other animals, as well as to make you very truly sought after? And now it is five o’clock.’

‘Yes,’ said Kangaroo (да, — сказал Кенгуру). ‘I wish that I hadn’t I thought you would do it by charms and incantations (я думал, что ты сделаешь это чарами и заклинаниями), but this is a practical joke (а это розыгрыш).’

‘Joke (розыгрыш)!’ said Nqong from his bath in the blue gums (сказал Нквонг из своей ванны в голубых эвкалиптах). ‘Say that again and I’ll whistle up Dingo and run your hind legs off

‘No,’ said the Kangaroo ‘I must apologise (я должен извиниться). Legs are legs, and you needn’t alter ‘em (ноги есть ноги, и не нужно изменять их) so far as I am concerned (насколько это касается меня = по моему мнению). I only meant to explain to Your Lordliness (я только хотел объяснить Вашей Светлейшести) that I’ve had nothing to eat since morning (что я ничего не ел с утра), and I’m very empty indeed (и я действительно очень пустой = и у меня действительно очень пусто в животе).’

incantation ["Inkxn'teIS(q)n], whistle [wIsl], alter ['Lltq]

‘Yes,’ said Kangaroo. ‘I wish that I hadn’t. I thought you would do it by charms and incantations, but this is a practical joke.’

‘Joke!’ said Nqong from his bath in the blue gums. ‘Say that again and I’ll whistle up Dingo and run your hind legs off.’

‘No,’ said the Kangaroo. ‘I must apologise. Legs are legs, and you needn’t alter ‘em so far as I am concerned. I only meant to explain to Your Lordliness that I’ve had nothing to eat since morning, and I’m very empty indeed.’

‘Yes,’ said Dingo (да, — сказала Динго) — Yellow-Dog Dingo (Желтая-Собака Динго), — ‘I am just in the same situation (я точно в таком же положении). I’ve made him different from all other animals (я сделала его отличным от всех других животных); but what may I have for my tea (но что мне будет на ужин)?’

Then said Nqong from his bath in the salt-pan (тогда Нквонг сказал из своей ванны в соляном озере), ‘Come and ask me about it to-morrow (приди и спроси меня об этом завтра), because I’m going to wash (потому что я собираюсь купаться).’

So they were left in the middle of Australia (и они остались посреди Австралии), Old Man Kangaroo and Yellow-Dog Dingo (Старина Кенгуру и Желтая-Собака Динго), and each said (и каждый сказал), ‘That’s your fault (это твоя вина = это ты виноват).’

situation ["sItju'eIS(q)n], each [JC], fault [fLlt]

Yes,’ said Dingo — Yellow-Dog Dingo, — ‘I am just in the same situation. I’ve made him different from all other animals; but what may I have for my tea?’

Then said Nqong from his bath in the salt-pan, ‘Come and ask me about it to-morrow, because I’m going to wash.’

So they were left in the middle of Australia, Old Man Kangaroo and Yellow-Dog Dingo, and each said, ‘That’s your fault.’

THIS is the mouth-filling song
Of the race that was run by a Boomer
Run in a single burst — only event of its kind — (бежал в едином рывке — единственное событие подобного рода)
Started by Big God Nqong from Warrigaborrigarooma
Old Man Kangaroo first: Yellow-Dog Dingo behind

Kangaroo bounded away (Кенгуру скакал прочь),
His back-legs working like pistons
Bounded from morning till dark
Twenty-five feet to a bound
Like a yellow cloud in the distance
Much too busy to bark

My! but they covered the ground (ну и расстояния они пробегали; to cover the ground — покрывать большие расстояния)!

Nobody knows where they went
Or followed the track that they flew in
For that Continent (ибо этому Континенту)
Hadn’t been given a name
They ran thirty degrees
From Torres Straits to the Leeuwin
(Look at the Atlas, please (посмотри в Атлас, пожалуйста)),
And they ran back as they came

S’posing you could trot (предположим, ты мог бы пробежаться рысью; to suppose)
From Adelaide to the Pacific
For an afternoon’s run
Half what these gentlemen did (/это/ половина того, что пробежали эти господа) —
You would feel rather hot (тебе бы стало весьма жарко; to feel — чувствовать),
But your legs would develop terrific
Yes, my importunate son
You’d be a Marvellous Kid

THIS is a picture of Old Man Kangaroo (это изображение Старины Кенгуру) when he was the Different Animal with four short legs (когда он был Другим Животным с четырьмя короткими ножками). I have drawn him grey and woolly (я нарисовал его серым и пушистым), and you can see (и ты можешь увидеть) that he is very proud (что он очень гордый) because he has a wreath of flowers in his hair (потому что у него венок из цветов в его волосах). He is dancing on an outcrop (он пляшет на обнажении пород) (that means a ledge of rock (это означает скалистый уступ) in the middle of Australia at six o’clock before breakfast (посреди Австралии в шесть часов до завтрака). You can see that it is six o’clock (ты можешь видеть, что сейчас шесть часов), because the sun is just getting up (потому что солнце как раз поднимается). The thing with the ears and the open mouth is Little God Nqa Nqa is very much surprised (Нква очень удивлен), because he has never seen a Kangaroo dance like that before (потому что он никогда прежде не видел, чтобы Кенгуру танцевал так). Little God Nqa is just saying (Маленькое Божество Нква как раз говорит), ‘Go away (убирайся),’ but the Kangaroo is so busy dancing (но Кенгуру так занят танцем) that he has not heard him yet (что он его еще не услышал).

The Kangaroo hasn’t any real name except Boomer He lost it because he was so proud
