Before he thought what he was doing the Elephant’s Child put out his trunk and plucked a large bundle of grass, dusted it clean against his fore-legs, and stuffed it into his own mouth.

‘‘Vantage number two (преимущество номер два)!’ said the Bi-Coloured-Python-Rock-Snake (сказал Двухцветный-Питон-Скалистый-Змей). ‘You couldn’t have done that with a mere-smear nose (ты не сделал бы этого крошечным носом). Don’t you think the sun is very hot here (не думаешь ли ты = не кажется ли тебе, что солнце очень жаркое здесь)?’

‘It is,’ said the Elephant’s Child (да = кажется, — сказал Слоненок), and before he thought what he was doing (и не успел он подумать, что он делает) he schlooped up a schloop of mud from the banks of the great grey-green, greasy Limpopo (/как/ он зачерпнул черпок ила с берегов великой серо-зеленой жирной Лимпопо; to schlep — волочить, тащить; to scoop — черпать, зачерпывать), and slapped it on his head (и нашлепнул его себе на голову; to slap — хлопать, шлепать), where it made a cool schloopy-sloshy mud-cap all trickly behind his ears (где он стал прохладной шляпно-нашлепной шапкой из ила, которая совсем растекалась за /его/ ушами; to slosh — хлюпать, шлепать; to trickle — течь тонкой струйкой, сочиться).

‘‘Vantage number two!’ said the Bi-Coloured-Python-Rock-Snake. ‘You couldn’t have done that with a mere-smear nose. Don’t you think the sun is very hot here?’

‘It is,’ said the Elephant’s Child, and before he thought what he was doing he schlooped up a schloop of mud from the banks of the great grey-green, greasy Limpopo, and slapped it on his head, where it made a cool schloopy-sloshy mud-cap all trickly behind his ears.

‘‘Vantage number three (преимущество номер три)!’ said the Bi-Coloured-Python-Rock-Snake (сказал Двухцветный-Питон-Скалистый-Змей). ‘You couldn’t have done that with a mere-smear nose (ты не мог бы сделать этого крошечным носом). Now how do you feel about being spanked again (а что ты думаешь о том, чтобы тебя снова отшлепали; to feel about — иметь мнение о чем-л., ком-л.)?’

‘‘Scuse me (извините /меня/),’ said the Elephant’s Child (сказал Слоненок), ‘but I should not like it at all (но я бы этого совсем не хотел).’

‘How would you like to spank somebody (/а/ как насчет того, чтобы отшлепать кого-нибудь)?’ said the Bi-Coloured-Python-Rock-Snake (спросил Двухцветный-Питон-Скалистый-Змей).

‘I should like it very much indeed (конечно я очень бы хотел /этого/),’ said the Elephant’s Child (сказал Слоненок).

‘‘Vantage number three!’ said the Bi-Coloured-Python-Rock-Snake. ‘You couldn’t have done that with a mere-smear nose. Now how do you feel about being spanked again?’

‘‘Scuse me,’ said the Elephant’s Child, ‘but I should not like it at all.’

‘How would you like to spank somebody?’ said the Bi-Coloured-Python-Rock-Snake.

‘I should like it very much indeed,’ said the Elephant’s Child.

‘Well,’ said the Bi-Coloured-Python-Rock-Snake (ну, — сказал Двухцветный-Питон-Скалистый-Змей), ‘you will find that new nose of yours very useful to spank people with (ты найдешь твой новый нос очень полезным для шлепанья = ты обнаружишь, что твой новый нос очень пригодится, чтобы лупить людей = других).’

‘Thank you,’ said the Elephant’s Child (спасибо, — сказал Слоненок), ‘I’ll remember that (я запомню это); and now I think I’ll go home to all my dear families and try (а сейчас я думаю = собираюсь пойти домой ко всем моим дорогим семействам и испробовать).’

new [njH], useful ['jHsful], dear [dIq]

‘Well,’ said the Bi-Coloured-Python-Rock-Snake, ‘you will find that new nose of yours very useful to spank people with.’

‘Thank you,’ said the Elephant’s Child, ‘I’ll remember that; and now I think I’ll go home to all my dear families and try.’

So the Elephant’s Child went home across Africa (и Слоненок пошел домой через Африку) frisking and whisking his trunk (взмахивая и помахивая = обмахиваясь и отмахиваясь своим хоботом; to frisk — махать /веером/; to whisk — смахивать, отгонять /напр. мух хвостом/). When he wanted fruit to eat (когда он хотел поесть фруктов) he pulled fruit down from a tree (он срывал фрукты/плоды с дерева), instead of waiting for it to fall (вместо того, чтобы ждать, пока они упадут) as he used to do (как он делал это раньше; used to do — бывало / раньше делал). When he wanted grass (когда он хотел травы) he plucked grass up from the ground (он срывал траву с земли, не нагибаясь; up — стоя, в вертикальном положении, в верхнем положении), instead of going on his knees (вместо того, чтобы становиться на колени) as he used to do (как он делал это раньше). When the flies bit him (когда его кусали мухи; to bite — кусать) he broke off the branch of a tree and used it as a fly-whisk (он отламывал ветку /с/ дерева и использовал ее как мухобойку; to break off — отламывать); and he made himself a new, cool, slushy-squshy mud-cap (и он делал себе новую прохладную мякотно-слякотную шапочку из ила; slushy — покрытый грязью, слякотный; squashy — мягкий, мясистый; сочный) whenever the sun was hot (всякий раз, как было жаркое солнце). When he felt lonely walking through Africa (когда он чувствовал себя одиноко, идя через = по Африке) he sang to himself down his trunk (он пел себе через хобот = дудя в хобот), and the noise was louder than several brass bands (и этот звук был громче, чем несколько = нескольких духовых оркестров).

So the Elephant’s Child went home across Africa frisking and whisking his trunk. When he wanted fruit to eat he pulled fruit down from a tree, instead of waiting for it to fall as he used to do. When he wanted grass he plucked grass up from the ground, instead of going on his knees as he used to do. When the flies bit him he broke off the branch of a tree and used it as a fly-whisk; and he made himself a new, cool, slushy-squshy mud-cap whenever the sun was hot. When he felt lonely walking through Africa he sang to himself down his trunk, and the noise was louder than several brass bands.

He went especially out of his way to find a broad Hippopotamus (он специально постарался найти обширную Гиппопотамиху) (she was no relation of his (он не была ему родственницей)), and he spanked her very hard (и он отшлепал ее очень сильно), to make sure (чтобы убедиться; to make sure — убедиться, удостовериться) that the Bi-Coloured-Python-Rock-Snake had spoken the truth about his new trunk (что Двухцветный-Питон-Скалистый-Змей говорил правду о его новом хоботе; to speak — разговаривать, говорить). The rest of the time he picked up the melon rinds (в остальное время он подбирал дынную кожуру) that he had dropped on his way to the Limpopo (которую он набросал на пути к Лимпопо) — for he was a Tidy Pachyderm (ибо он был Чистоплотным Толстокожим Животным; pachyderm — толстокожее животное).

He went especially out of his way to find a broad Hippopotamus (she was no relation of his), and he spanked her very hard, to make sure that the Bi-Coloured-Python-Rock-Snake had spoken the truth about his new trunk. The rest of the time he picked up the melon rinds that he had dropped on his way to the Limpopo — for he was a Tidy Pachyderm.

One dark evening he came back to all his dear families (одним темным вечером он вернулся ко всем своим дорогим семействам), and he coiled up his trunk and said (и он свернул кольцом свой хобот и сказал; to coil up — свертывать(ся) кольцом, спиралью), ‘How do you do (как вы поживаете)?’ They were very glad to see him (они были очень рады видеть его), and immediately said (и тотчас сказали), ‘Come here and be spanked for your ‘satiable curtiosity (подойди сюда и будь отшлепанным = мы отшлепаем тебя за твое ненасытное вежливое любопытство).’

‘Pooh,’ said the Elephant’s Child (тьфу, — сказал Слоненок). ‘I don’t think you peoples know anything about spanking (не думаю, что вы, родственнички, знаете что-нибудь о шлепаньи = о том, как шлепать); but I do, and I’ll show you (а /вот/ я знаю, и /я/ покажу вам).’

Then he uncurled his trunk (тогда он раскрутил свой хобот) and knocked two of his dear brothers head over heels (и врезал двум из своих дорогих братцев так, что они полетели кубарем: «ударил двух из своих дорогих братьев кубарем»; head over heels — вверх тормашками, вверх ногами).

evening ['JvnIN], immediately [I'mJdIqtlI], brother ['brADq]

One dark evening he came back to all his dear families, and he coiled up his trunk and said, ‘How do you do?’ They were very glad to see him, and immediately said, ‘Come here and be spanked for your ‘satiable curtiosity.’

‘Pooh,’ said the Elephant’s Child. ‘I don’t think you peoples know anything about spanking; but I do, and I’ll show you.’
