The United Nations organization

1. The United Nations was born on October 24, 1945. The emergence of the UN as an international organization expressed the will of the peoples to prevent another war. October 24 is now marked each year as United Nations Day.

2. The United Nation is an organization of sovereign nations representing almost all of humanity. It has its central goal – the maintenance of international peace and security. The organization calls for development of friendly relations among nations based on equal rights and self-determination of peoples, the solution of problems of an economic, social, cultural and humanitarian nature jointly.

3. There are six main organs in the UNO: the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, the Secretariat, the Trusteeship Council and the International Court of Justice. The Court has its seat at the Hague, Netherlands. All other organs are based at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

4. The United Nations has played and continues to play an active role in reducing tension in the world, preventing conflicts and putting an end to fighting.

5. There are over one hundred and eighty states in the UNO now. The members of the General Assembly talk to each other in many languages, but officially there are only six – Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Spanish and Russian.

MAGISTRATES'S COURTS

1. Every person charged with an offence is summoned to appear before a local magistrate's court. Such court may impose a fine up to 2000 pounds or twelve months' imprisonment. For some specified offences the laws prescribes maximum penalties below these limits.

2. With 98 per cent of cases the magistrates decide on guilt or innocence, and if necessary what penalty to impose. With more serious cases the magistrates can decide only to send them for trial in a crown court. A person accused before a magistrates' court may demand to sent for trial before a crown court in some of more serious cases.

3. A magistrates' court normally consists of three Justices of the Peace (JPs). The JPs are ordinary but worthy citizens. The Lord Chancellor on advice of local administrative committees appoints them to their positions.

4. JPs have no formal qualifications; they are chosen merely for their good reputation, often with the support of political parties. Once appointed, they are expected to attend courses of instruction about their work. There are 28000 JPs in England; each of them works in the court on about 30-50 days a year.
