Protecting the environment Rebecca Hosking is a young wildlife film-maker who grew up in a small town called Modbury, just a short distance from the sea. She has recently become involved in environmental issues, especially the growing problem of plastic rubbish.   Rebecca realised just how serious a problem this was while going around the world as a film-maker. While on an island in the Pacific Ocean, she discovered that because of its position and the ocean currents there, lots of plastic rubbish floated in from other countries and ended up on its beaches. This was having an effect on both local people and the wildlife. Rebecca says it reminded her if the plastic bags floating in the sea where she swam as a child.   When Rebecca arrived back in Britain, she felt she wanted to do something about the situation, but wasn’t sure what. Then she remembered the films she’d made during her travels. She decided to show them to traders and townspeople in Modbury. As a result, a lot of people decided not to use plastic bags any more. In the end, all 43 shops in the town joined in the campaign.   Since then, people in the town have found clever ways to avoid using plastic. For example, the local art gallery has begun using old blankets to protect art works during delivery to clients, and sheets of recycled paper are now used at the flower shop. Shoppers are asked to use cotton or paper bags for their shopping. And the story has certainly caught the public’s imagination – a lot of towns in Britain, Australia, Russia and the USA are following Modbury’s example.   “I’m not suggesting we should give up using all plastic – far from it”, says Rebecca. “It’s a very useful product and it’s hard to imagine our lives without it. We all found not using plastic bags really hard at first, but now I’ve just learnt to put cotton bag in my pocket in case I want to go shopping in the way home”. As with everything connected with protecting the environment, it seemed like a small step, but it could make a big difference. Now after being involved in the town’s environmental activities for so long, Rebecca has decided to return to her job as a film-maker. “It’s been brilliant”, she says, “but I miss being close to nature, with the wildlife. That’ll be what I concentrate on in my work from now on – it’s where I’m happiest, after all.”

Read the text and questions below. For each question, mark the correct letter А, В, С or D next to the question number.

Anna Gomez Anna Gomez is a successful TV sports presenter, but most people still think of her as the famous of her as the famous women’s ice-skating champion who won several important competitions when she was younger. ‘As a child, my dream was actually to become a ballet dancer - I didn’t own any skates until I was nine, and didn’t become really keen on skating until I was fourteen,’ says Anna. She went on to university where, despite ice-skating almost all the time, she left with an excellent degree. ‘I felt I owned it to my parents. They supported me through university, and expected me to do well there – I didn’t feel I could disappoint them.’ In a sport where most stars become famous as teenagers, Anna was unusual in being in her twenties before she won any major titles. ‘When I was younger, I got very angry at competitions, shouting at judges if I disagree with them. That made me unpopular, especially with other skaters. My technique was just as good as theirs and I had a very encouraging coach at the time. The problem was in my head – I just didn’t think I had what it takes to be a champion. That changed as I won more competitions, and I was performing at my best by the age of twenty-five.” Anna retired from professional ice-skating five years later, having achieved great success during that period. ‘It was a difficult decision. As you get near the end of your career, people always ask when you’re going to stop. At the time, I wasn’t sure that I was actually ready to give up. But, looking back, I’m glad I stopped when I did. You shouldn’t think too much about the past – just move on to the next thing.”
