MAIN SWITCHBOARD (MSB)

The electric energy in the ship's electrical system is produced by electric generators. After that, the electric current comes to the main switchboard which is the central distributing station on board. The MSB effects distribution of electrical energy between the consumers.

The MSB is a special metal structure which contains different equipment and accessories. The basic elements of each MSB include the following equipment:

1. The switching equipment which serves to close and open electric circuits. This equipment includes starting switches, circuit breakers, starting buttons, etc.

2. Starting and control equipment which includes rheostats, regulators and controllers.

3. Protection equipment which includes safety devices, fuses, all sorts of protective relays, etc.

4. Signalling and measuring instrumentation.

The MSB is arranged with maximum safety precautions. The front side contains only signaling and measuring instrumentation. All other equipment along with current-conducting parts is mounted in the back side. However, all the equipment can be controlled and regulated by means of special handles and switches which are located in the front side.

Main switchboards are usually installed in the electric power plant rooms. However, MSB are surrounded by passages about 0.6 - 1m wide. The width of the passages depends on the ship's dimensions and the length of the MSB. The entrance to the MSB room is closed with doors equipped with special devices which can hold the door in the open position.

All the instrumentation and measuring equipment of the MSB allows to enable constant monitoring and supervision of the power plant. The power plant operation can be controlled either manually or automatically. The power plant control can be also effected remotely from the central control room or from the bridge.

The electric energy distribution is effected by means of special distributing means. Each ship has the following electrical networks:

1. Power network. It supplies electric energy to drive engine room mechanisms and other ship's equipment.

2. Lighting network. It is used to enable lighting of all ship's rooms and open decks. Lighting network also provides signaling lanterns and navigational equipment with electricity.

3. Emergency lighting network. It is independent on the main lighting network. Emergency lighting is used to illuminate corridors, life-boat areas, control rooms in case of emergency.

4. Weak current network: It effects electricity supply for telephones, telegraphs, fire alarm, etc.

5. Portable-lighting network. This network supplies sockets of portable lamps and lanterns.

6. Electric navigational equipment network. It is used for supplying gyrocompasses, echo-sounders, electromechanical logs, etc.
