My Company (Units 1, 2).

Hello. My name is Amy.My life is always very busy. I’m part of a consulting company called “Sprangbradan”. We are active in eight countries. We work with money we get from the European Union for our projects. We have over 3000 employees. About 60 % of the employees are women. We are the biggest employer in the town. We discuss problems and our main objective (our target) is to make a new future.

Most of our customers are in the Paris area. Our main competitor is the USA. Japan is a very important supplier for us. The headquarters of my company is in Sweden and the turnover is high. We sometimes use outside (external) marketing consultants to give us ideas.

I work as a human resources officer. I think the best thing about my job is meeting people because it’s nice to make new friends. I work with employees a lot and talk to them about their personal development.

My best friend is P.A. to the boss. He deals with everything and looks at the newspapers’ news every day.

My sister is a chief buyer. She looks for new and cheaper suppliers all the time. Her job is also to look after our customers.

My job (Unit 5).

Hello. My name is Alison. I am a very busy person. I’m in charge of the company “AMC”. We are active in eight countries and we work with money we get from the European Union for our projects. We are small at the moment. I work closely with female colleagues: Mary and Daniela.

Mary is a consultant. We consult her on finance and management questions. Daniela is a personnel manager. She is interested in people management. Sometimes she works at training. Daniela is responsible for personal development.

I think the best thing about my job is meeting people because it’s nice to make new friends. I have a lot of business discussions in my job. I also like the e-mail communication. One thing I don’t like is writing reports. I work a lot on projects so I write a lot of project reports which is very boring.

I go to the US about 6 times a year on business. I like to travel in my job. Work with no travel is not exciting. I sometimes work at the weekend and have some business trips.I think work can be stressful, so I really like walking because it is relaxing.

My city (Unit 6, 9).

Hello, my name’s Anna. I live in Naberezhnye Chelny. It’s not far from Kazan, about 250 kilometers. It’s in the north-east of Tatarstan. Naberezhnye Chelny is situated on the bank of the Kama river. It’s not a very big city. Its population is about 600 thousand people. You can get here by car, by bus, by plane or by train. It will take you 20 minutes to get to the railway station and almost an hour to the airport.

My university is quite close and I usually walk there. It’s a 15 minutes’ walk from home. It’s better to go on foot because public transport is always full. It’s really awful! Sometimes my father drives me to my studies. Unfortunately, my friend lives outside Naberezhnye Chelny. It’s an hour bus ride. That’s very inconvenient.

I live in the city center, in a quite big street. Life in the city center is quite noisy, but I prefer to live close to good shops – I love shopping. «Omega» is my favorite shopping area! It’s a lovely place. I love Naberezhnye Chelny at night. The streets are safe and beautiful. The nightclubs are always full and the restaurants are busy. We have some places of interest for tourists. There are a lot of statues (for example, the statue of war heroes), mosques and churches, bridges and beautiful parks, squares, modern art galleries, theatres and a lake. The lakeside beach is wonderful! Naberezhnye Chelny is amazing! The people are friendly and the city is clean.

My office (Unit 10).

Hello. My name is Mike. I am part of a big company. My office is a large building in the city centre. I work in a headquarters of my company. There are 4 floors in the building that is why elevator is necessary. There is a reception area on the ground floor. There is the latest company news on the computer reception and information on our intranet. There is an excellent staff restaurant on the first floor. The food there is fresh and tasty. Besides, there are some drinks machines and that is very convenient.

On the second floor there are open plan offices. Some employees don’t have personal space. As for me, I have my fixed desk. There are individual offices on the third floor. There is a lot of computer equipment and new furniture.

On the top floor there is a gym but there are no smoking rooms in our office. There is a car park, but there aren’t a lot of spaces, only for top management. There is a railway station nearby, so lots of people come by train. Our office is in the center of the city, there are two beautiful parks across the street and a swimming pool half a kilometer away. Walking and swimming are relaxing. Next to the office there is a shopping center. Our company is big and profitable and I believe we have very good working conditions.

The team (Unit 8).

I'm a manager of a small team. All managers need a good assistant and Jack is fantastic. He’s very good at organising things, very efficient, friendly and positive. He smiles all the time and always has a lot of energy. Jean is from Paris and he’s my boss. He’s a great motivator – he gives me a lot of support and always tells me when I do a good job. One thing I don’t like about him is that he’s always ten minutes late for meetings.

John is the financial man in the team. He’s a special character, good at his job, but some people don’t like him because he can be very direct. Most people think he’s rude. He’s my husband but working together isn’t a problem for us.

David’s based in Darwin. He buys a lot from us but when we discuss prices he can be very aggressive and impatient. Sometimes I have to say ‘no’. You can’t always say ‘yes’ to your clients.

Katie is nice. She’s a sales manager, responsible for New South Wales. She is very confident and so is excellent at presenting to customers. She’s also very creative – she loves thinking about new products. We get on really well together, both in and outside the office.

Sports (Unit 12).

Hello. My name is Mark. I'm fond of sport very much. Sport is an essential part of our life. People join different sport clubs, go to live matches or watch sport on TV. Sport makes our bodies strong. I like to do lots of sport. Every morning I do physical exercises because it helps to keep fit. I also go to the gym and do weight training there. My favourite individual sport is swimming, but I prefer team sports like ice hockey and basketball. I love team sport because I hate being alone and I'm good at socialising. I don't like to lose and winning is important for me. We often beat another team. My job is very stressful and I prefer outdoor activities such as walking, camping or jogging in the summer. It's relaxing. It's also great to go skiing and skating in the winter. I love to watch sport on TV. I'm a football fan and I cheer for my favorite team “Real Madrid”.

The most popular sporting event for me is the World cup final. One of the most famous moments was in 2002 when Germany lost to Brazil. My favorite sportswoman is Venus Williams. In the 2003 Wimbledon final, Serena Williams beat her sister.

I think we should visit doctors, eat healthy food and support our health.

Travelling (Unit 15).

Hi! My name is Evelyn. Last year I travelled to the sea by plane. At first I and my friend got tickets in the booking office. At the day of our departure we collected the things and went to the airport by car. When we arrived, we had to check in. We showed our passports and tickets at the check-in desk. Our boarding was at 10 o'clock, but at the gate it turned out that the flight was delayed by 45 minutes. When we boarded the plane at last and it took off, the flight attendant served people drinks and food. The flight went well and I slept almost all the time.

We landed at 3 o'clock. It took us 4 hours to fly to Turkey. We didn't take a rank for the suitcases, because the taxi stand was just outside the airport and we caught one.

We lived in a modern hotel. The service was quite good. The chambermaid made our beds and cleaned the room every day. I woke up early, did some exercises in the gym, played tennis. When the weather was very hot, we relaxed on the beach, sunbathed and swam. I and my friend went on coach tours, did sightseeing and visited great museums. We enjoyed a tasty meal in one of the excellent restaurants, hired a car, explored the country and took photos of the picturesque places. I met with interesting people. In the evening we saw shows at the theatre or just sat and read newspapers and books in the lounge. I and my friend rested for two weeks. It was a wonderful trip!

Online (Unit 20).

Hi, my name is Mike Parker and I give technical help to people with computer problems in the company. Modern society cannot imagine its life without computer. Computers help us in our everyday activity and working life. We can connect to the company network if you want to work from home, search for useful information, use the intranet to learn the company news. There are, of course, some rules about using the internet at work. You are not allowed to surf on the websites in work time for private use and connect to internet chat rooms.

I give technical help to people with computer problems in the company. I get a lot of angry e-mails every day from people with problems: people can’t log on, can’t open their e-mails or attached files, people say their computer is too slow, some people can’t remember their password, delete the documents by mistake or download files which have virus. I usually get over 50 e-mails a day because I work in a big company. It’s absolutely crazy.

My family also uses computer at home. With the arrival of the internet, the biggest change is that Lauren – my wife does most of our shopping online. It’s great because it’s really easy. She just logs on to our online supermarket or clothes store and buys what we need. Most shops send the products the next day. It’s a little more expensive but we both really hate shopping in real shops and so are happy to pay a little more. Besides we can book our holiday travel on the internet.

Marta, my daughter, is 15. She has a PC in her room and uses the internet all the time. Of course, she gets information for her schoolwork but she also spends a lot of time in chat rooms talking to friends all over the world. It’s good for her Spanish because she can practice with friends in Mexico and Argentina. Moreover Marta can download free music. For her, the Internet is fantastic.

George, my son, is 19. He’s studying hard at the moment and wants to be a website designer. In fact, he’s already helped design sites for a couple of local businesses. His girl friend hates computers and thinks we all spend too much time in front of the PC and I agree. Sometimes he doesn’t move for more than 12 hours. I think out of all of us his life is most dominated by the computer.

2) What are the rules of using computers at work?

3) Why does Mike get a lot of angry emails every day?

4) What computer problems do most people have?

5) What does his wife Lauren do via the Internet?

6) What does Martha use the Internet for?

7) Why does George spend lots of time sitting before the PC?

Out of order (Unit 26).

Hello. My name is Jane. I'm a manager in the USA and had some problems on my last trip. I planned to fly to London last month for business but the flight was cancelled 24 hours before I travelled. I was really stressed, but I telephoned a travel agent friend who was really helpful and very quick. He solved the problem by finding another flight just one hour later. Unfortunately, the hotel staff didn't meet me at the airport.

I had a reservation in a terrible three-star hotel. I booked a single room. The room was cold and the lift was out of order. The hotel restaurant was always busy and the food was overcooked and cold. There was a problem with the shower - there was no hot water and no clean towels in the room. The coffee machine was broken. I wanted something from the minibar, but it was empty. I asked the receptionist to send somebody up and solve the problem but the staff were rude. Besides, the people in the next room were so noisy, that I couldn't sleep. I wanted to change the room and told the manager about all these problems. She said she would investigate, but she didn't.

Moreover, I had a major technical problem with the computer network. It was very slow. My computer crashed for no reason every 20 minutes. I had to find a solution quickly and called technical staff. They solved the problem and even upgraded my computer with more memory. But I'll never stay in that hotel again.

I had one really embarrassing moment. During the exhibition, I bought a new mobile phone. When I tried it at the hotel it didn't work so I took it back. I complained but the assistant was very patient. In fact, he dealt with the problem very quickly - he switched it on! He was very polite but I felt really stupid.

I ordered some products from a supplier at the exhibition I waited for three weeks but nothing arrived. Finally, I telephoned and explained the problem to a customer care manager. She said my order was sent to the wrong address because of a computer problem but she was very customer friendly: she listened, apologized and then offered me a 25% discount. Greatcustomerservice.

Health (Unit 27).

Nice to meet you. I am Lewis. Let’s speak about health.Health is an essential part of our life. I can give you some advice that can improve your life. If you’ve put on weight and want to lose it, you should think carefully about what food you buy. You shouldn’t eat junk food, you have to exercise regularly and drink 2 liters of water every day. For example, if I’m overweight I try to be on a diet. I eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. Since I cut down on eating fast food and chocolate, my weight has gone down by several kilos. I wish I did more exercises to be slim, but I haven’t got time. I want to relax more bur my job is very stressful. I would like to reduce working hours but I have too much to do. So, staying healthy can be difficult when you sit at work all day.

It is also important to give up all your bad habits. For example, my father wants to stop smoking because smoking is very bad for the lungs. But he is on 40 a day, because he always gets stressed. As for my mother, she is a very relaxed person. She is a vegetarian and doesn’t eat meat. My mother doesn’t spend all her time working and has a good work-life balance. So, she never gets tense. Besides, she doesn’t go to bed too late and gets a good night’s rest. I would like to be as laid back as my mom.
