  1. Reporter Vesti.UA published an article “Waves of Marauders Throughout the Country: Where Did They Come From?”. Kiev, 06/03/2014

Reporter Vesti.UA published an article “Stop the Looting! Waves of Marauders Throughout the Country: Where Did They Come From?”.

After the change of power, Kiev and the regions faced a wave of crime. The law enforcement agencies were demoralized, and Self-Defense, the Afghans, Right Sector and common people, who cared about the country, went out of their houses to keep order on the streets. Meanwhile, they were bothered by the lack of money, and groups of marauders, pretending to be members of Self-Defense, undermined their confidence. Reporter tried to find out who are looters and who are defenders.

Last Friday, no one could be seen in front of the district council in Sophia Borshhagivka, Kiev. Few people would only come to the post office in the lobby. But the district council is closed. Several bullet holes cover the gray iron-shod doors. On the first floor, the reception desk and offices are destroyed: the stuff is on the floor and the safe deposits have been opened by welders. Three members of the executive committee are trying to put the place into order and meet our journalist with a hysteric cry:

“Go away! Can’t you understand that if we tell you anything today, they’ll come and kill us tomorrow,” says a short blonde with a hint of nervousness.

“Who are ‘they’?”

“Those who were taking us out of this building with a gun to our heads and destroying everything here!” A brunette in her 30s gives me a pleading look.

The third woman is trying to calmly put the papers into order:

“There’s been a takeover, right here. They’ve taken all the documents, computers and lots of other equipment. They’ve beaten our deputies. But we can’t comment on the matter because an investigator’s questioning the witnesses in the room over there … Maybe he’ll tell you something.”

The investigator is nervous, too:

“Call up my bosses! The times are now, you know… I tell you something I shouldn’t have, and they’ll overwork me.”

“Who will?” I say.

“Miss, the times are revolutionary now”, says he.

He’s scared for a reason: it’s not only about the restless times, but also about the case he’s entrusted with – it’s considered “not cool”. What the locals say, shivering with fear, suggests many ideas.
“It was about a half hour left before the end of the workday on Wednesday (February, 26. – Reporter), when a few cars pulled up here,” says Viktoriya, who works at the post office, where the windows face the square in front of the district council. “A couple dozens of armed men in masks walked out.”
“They forced their way into the doors and windows, smashed a window here”. Another woman nods at the remains of the frame in the corner. “From the top floor, the council members must've spotted the aggressors coming and had time to lock the iron doors leading to the first floor, but the men started shooting, broke the lock and ran upstairs. We couldn't see what happened next because we locked up in the office. We were so scared we couldn't even take a glimpse. But then people began gathering by the front doors, we asked if we might go, and they let us.

The locals, who filled the square in front the district council, showed me a video of what happened, recorded on their cell phones. The aggressors didn’t stay upstairs long and soon took out Oles Kudrik, head of the council, and a few local deputies, one of them with a bruised face. Kudrik was forced to write a resignation letter in front of everyone. Then one of the aggressors, waving a bag with the council stamps, declared that they were Right Sector, who had come to restore justice. It was Vasiliy Mikhaylovich Rizun, a local, who had allegedly informed them that “the locals didn’t like the head of the council”, and they suggested right away he be chosen as the next head of the council. But the locals didn’t have any idea who that Rizun was and why he should chair the council. Rizun himself wasn’t present.

“A year and a half ago, that Kudrik himself, along with a group of Berkuts, took over the council that was chaired by Yuriy Denisenko,” says Viktor, a local. “It was practically a raider takeover. In the end, Denisenko was replaced with Kudrik. So it can be Kudrik who organized this to get rid of all the documents, so that the new government won’t find anything suspicious.”

The locals say that the aggressors took six bags with documents out of the building, as well as the equipment: a fax machine and a computer monitor. The next day, though, Kudrik was reinstated as head of the council. He refused to give any comments. But his assistant Sergey believes the takeover was organized by Denisenko.

“It was kind of revenge”, says he.
