Of his jacket, trundled back again into his old place against the bulwark.

1. This was all that I required to know

Israel could move about (Израэль мог передвигаться); he was now armed

(он был теперь вооружен); and if he had been at so much trouble to get rid of me

(и если он так старался избавиться от меня = удалить меня с палубы), it was

plain that I was meant to be the victim (было ясно, что я буду /его/ жертвой; to

be meant — предназначаться, разуметься). What he would do afterwards (что

он будет делать затем) — whether he would try to crawl right across the island

from North Inlet to the camp among the swamps,

болот) or whether he would fire Long Tom (или выстрелит из пушки; Long Tom

— дальнобойная пушка), trusting that his own comrades might come first to help

ему), was, of course, more than I could say (было, конечно, больше, чем я мог

2. Yet I felt sure that I could trust him in one point

могу доверять ему в одном вопросе), since in that our interests jumped together

together — совпадать, согласовываться), and that was in the disposition of the

We both desired to have she

stranded safe enough (мы оба желали посадить ее на мель вполне безопасно),

in a sheltered place (в укрытом месте), and so that, when the time came, she could

be got off again with as little labour and danger as might be

усилием = без особого труда и опасности; to get off — отбывать, сходить,

слезать); and until that was done I considered that my life would certainly be

3. While I was thus turning the business over in my mind

I had not been idle with my body (я не

I had stolen back to the cabin (я прокрался обратно в каюту; to

steal — воровать; красться), slipped once more into my shoes (скользнул

снова в башмаки = надел башмаки) and laid my hand at random on a bottle of

and now, with this for an excuse

I made my reappearance on the deck (я вновь

Yet I felt sure that I could trust him in one point, since in that our interests

Jumped together, and that was in the disposition of the schooner. We both

Desired to have she stranded safe enough, in a sheltered place, and so that,

When the time came, she could be got off again with as little labour and

Certainly be spared.

While I was thus turning the business over in my mind, I had not been idle

With my body. I had stolen back to the cabin, slipped once more into my shoes

And laid my hand at random on a bottle of wine, and now, with this for an

Excuse, I made my reappearance on the deck.

1. Hands lay as I had left him, all fallen together in a bundle

сникнуть; bundle — узел, связка, пучок), and with his eyelids lowered (с

опущенными веками = прищурив глаза), as though he were too weak to bear the

He

looked up, however, at my coming, knocked the neck off the bottle (он поднял

глаза, однако, при моем приходе, отбил горлышко бутылки), like a man who

had done the same thing often (как человек, который делал эту вещь часто), and

took a good swig, with his favourite toast of 'Here's luck!

Then he lay quiet for a little

(затем он лежал тихо короткое время), and then, pulling out a stick of tobacco,

begged me to cut him a quid

2. 'Cut me a junk o' that

старье, кусок, обломки),' says he, 'for I haven't no knife, and hardly strength

enough, so be as I had

Ah, Jim, Jim, I reckon I've missed stays

Cut me a quid, as 'll likely be the last,

lad (отрежь кусочек, который, наверно, будет /для меня/ последним, парень);

for I'm for my long home, and no mistake

3. 'Well (ладно),' said I, 'I'll cut you some tobacco (я отрежу вам табаку); but if I

was you and thought myself so badly

I would go to my prayers, like a Christian man (я бы

помолился, как /подобает/ христианину; to go to — обратиться, прибегнуть к

помощи; prayer — молитва).'

Well,' said I, 'I'll cut you some tobacco; but if I was you and thought

myself so badly, I would go to my prayers, like a Christian man.'

1. 'Why (зачем)?' said he. 'Now, you tell me why

2. 'Why (зачем)?' I cried (воскликнул я). 'You were asking me just now about the

You've broken your trust (вы

разрушили = изменили своему долгу); you've lived in sin and lies and blood (вы

жили /всю жизнь/ в грехе, во лжи и крови); there's a man you killed lying at

your feet this moment

сейчас); and you ask me why (и вы спрашиваете зачем)! For God's mercy, Mr.

Hands, that's why

3. I spoke with a little heat

раздражением), thinking of the bloody dirk he had hidden in his pocket (думая о

кровавом кинжале, который он спрятал в карман), and designed, in his ill

thoughts, to end me with

He, for his part, took a great draught of the wine (он, в свою

очередь, сделал большой глоток вина), and spoke with the most unusual

Mr. Hands, that's why.'
